I | 3 ; 8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Sept. 11, 1984 A request for traffic control signals at the intersection of Regional Road 2 and the Seventh Concession in Columbus has been turned down by the Durham Region Works Committee. The committee also rejected a request for a reduction in the speed limit through Columbus from the present 60 kmh to 50 kmh. The request for these changes had come from several residents of the Columbus community who say the road is heavily travelled by shift workers and on Friday and Sunday evenings during the summer months. However, the Works committee accepted a report from the Durham traffic department which found that speed- ing is not a factor "through the community, and the volume of traffic on the Seventh Concession is not suffic- ient enough to warrant signals at the inter- "section. The report also says there have been three collisions at the intersection over the past three years. The Works Committee has also turned down a request for a speed limit reduction on Regional Road 23 in the Chalk Lake area, the scene of a fatal accident earlier this year when an elder- ly Oshawa man lost his life as he tried to cross the road to reach the fresh water spring on the east side. The Committee decid- ed to leave the present 80 kmh {limit as it is, but "watch for pedestrian' signs will be posted 'in the area of the fresh water spring, which is a popular source of drink- ing water for people from all over Durham region. - The committee noted that this section of the Regional Road 23 is rountinely patrolled by police using stationary and mobile radar units.
