RR | | Asthma-beating This September, Durham Region Lung Association will begin an innovative new program designed to help pre- schoolers with asthma. Beginning on September 5th, a three week, six session Course will be held at the Whit- by Public Library from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday and Friday mornings. No registra- tion fees will be charged for this initial pilot program. Based on a highly suc- cessful program developed by the Utah Lung Association, the service aims to teach various simple self-care techniques which help two to five year olds keep their asthma in check. These techniques are basically the breathing and body relaxation methods taught by the Lung Association to older children and adult asthma sufferers. What is new, however, is the translation of these methods into a format that can be understood by very young children. Through gaming, modeling and imaging, the children will be taught to use their stomach muscles: and diaphragm to breathe MIC RK MK HK MK J i THAPAR | J DENTURE THERAPY CLINIC % () 66 Brock St. W., 194 King St. W., Uxbridge 852-5291 Oshawa 579-8752 |) 214 Dundas St. E., Whitby 668-7797 Open Weekdays including SUNDAY! ¥ -- By Appointment Only -- L-- HK HK MK HK more easily during an asthma episode. Parents and children will also learn how to reduce the anxiety and tension that often contributes to the severity of an attack. Program Co-ordinator, Erica Nemis, stresses that these methods are not intended to replace correct medication, which is vital for the con- tinuing maintenance of a severe asthmatic. What, can be achieved is a reduction in the number and severity of attacks. During the program, the children will meet such friends as "'Clippy Doll" (a cardboard and paperclip doll used to teach floppy relaxation movements) and "Hot Botts" (a hot water bot- tle inside a soft clean covering).
