Fair will open during evening for first time Fair days are here again, almost, and by the sound of things, the Port Perry Fair will be the biggest and best celebration yet. Not only will the Labour Day weekend festivities take on a Bicentennial flair, they'll also go on longer. For the first time in fair history the grounds will be open all day and all evening too. As fair president Stewart Diceman points out, "We must move with the times and although this, the Bicen- tennial year, makes us reflect back, it is also the time to look ahead". The fair gets under- way Saturday Septem- ber 1st with a Bicenten- nial parade through Port Perry, a beautiful Man jailed over death of woman A 41-year old sales manager has been given a maximum sentence -- two years less a day -- for dangerous driving that resulted in the death of a 33-year old woman at an Uxbridge street dance. Clyve DeNyke, of Pickering, who was im- paired when his car slammed into Lois Graham and her 3-year old daughter last July, was also banned from driving for three years and put on three years probation. In handing DeNyke the maximum sentence yesterday, Whitby County Court Judge Frank Dunlap said it was his duty '"'to spell out to the public at large the attitude of the cour- ts" toward impaired drivers. The court was told that DeNyke has had two previous convic- tions of drinking and driving since 1977. Police evidence showed DeNyke registered 170 and 180 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood in breathalyzer tests about an hour after the 1 a.m. accident. The legal driving limit is 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres. DeNyke said he couldn't remember the accident or events im- mediately before or af- ter it. He had originally been charged with criminal negligence causing death but was found quilty of the lesser charge of dangerous driving. He was also sentenced to two years less a day -- to be served concurren- and the barricades at the corner of Brock and Toronto Sts. had been removed shortly before the accident occurred. Sunday features mors horse . shows, a registered beef show, a fiddle contest (better grease up them fingers), horse races and pari-mutuals, followed by a rock-em sock-em demolition derby. Sound good so far? Wait! There's more! When Monday mor- ning rolls around there'll be even more country entertainment, including the traditional excellence of the Holstein show and the Dairy Princess com- petition. Not to mention the light and heavy hor- se - shows, some hor- seshoe pitching, a commercial beef show and auction, a swine show and auction and of course, the exciting hor- se draws. Feel free to wander around the fairgrounds all weekend long, checking out the Bicentennial demon- strations in the craft house, the historical steam show and the farm exhibits which will take on particular significance this year. And don't. forget to take the kids to the petting 200.
