2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- August 8, 1984 August 1st was a special day for Hazel Balfour, who celebrated her 90th birthday with a party at Port Perry's Community Nursing Home. Miss Balfour, who was a resident of Prince Albert for many years, at- tributes her longevity to "hard work. Other than than, | couldn't tell you." IS YOUR NAME ON THE VOTERS' LIST? Elgin Park has had a permanent cement washroom building for the last several years, but it wasn't until recent- ly that portable washrooms were install- ed in other parks, due to public demand. "When we didn't have any washrooms in any of the parks, people were relieving themselves behind the trees, behind the cars and right out in the open," Mr. Kester recalled. . 'The neighbours were calling us up all the time com- plaining and you couldn't blame them." Pressure mounted un- til portables were install- ed at Uxpool, at the arena and at Zephyr Park. There are five of the rented units throughout the township. Surprisingly, there has been no vandalism (to Mr. Kester's knowledge) directed towards the plastic portables. Van- dals have tended to pick on the permanent ce- ment building and have virtually ignored the im- ' promptu johnnies, which are rented throughout the summer season for $60 per month. And even if there were vandalism problems with the portables, the owners, not the township, would be responsible for repairs. The owners are also responsible for WEDDING INVITATIONS PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street 985-7383 III ICICI ICICI Wa ew (Hwy. 7A & Water St.) MAKE BEAUTIFUL SCUGOG GLASS & MIRROR Lakeview Plaza - Port Perry The Elgin Park washrooms are quite another story. '""They're left in a deplorable condition. People stuff the toilets full of paper and do all kinds of unmentionable things that shouldn't be done in a public washroom. I think it's a real problem but I don't know how you'd go about fixing it,"" Mr. Kester ad- mitted. "Maybe more patrolling by the police." A retired farmer acts as caretaker for the township parks and he has to clean up the mess as he checks on the washrooms a couple times each day. Hired full-time by the township, this gentleman also takes care of grass cutting and repairs to the picnic tables and fences. '""He goes way beyond the call of duty, working more on the weekend than he should be and often not putting down his hours," Mr. Kester - said. "He's been with us four or five years and I don't know what we'd do without him." The Elgin Park toilets are open 24 hours during the summer and Mr. Kester says the van- dalism problems might improve if the facilities were closed during the night but he doesn't see how that could be done. In Port Perry, the Lat- cham Centre washrooms were closed to the public years ago, following serious attacks of van- dalism and Councillor Jack Cottrell doesn't foresee any change in the Latcham Centre policy. Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor says the problem will be discussed at COCICICHCY GIFTS! * Framed * Custom Cut PCI CSC IC SCC SCC SC SC Se Re SRC o --------- --- 985-2844 IC -- ww ----- 4 INSURANCE DJ TAYLO INSURANCE BROKERS LTD. 170 Water Street North, Port Perry - 985-8416 Also see us about your Lite, Auto, Farm, Commercial & Mortgage Insurance Needs! In the meantime, he'll look into the possibility of posting a sign on the washrooms next to the Palmer Park ball dia- mond. Many people us- ing the park haven't been aware the washrooms are there, and open 24 hours, because they're not well-marked. 'My position is that we need a full-time parks crew with a supervisor to spend a little more time in the parks and the washrooms in them," Mayor Taylor said. 'I think the Township is at an age and size where we have to accept the' responsibility of public washrooms. I'm suppor- tive. Council just hasn't been able to come up with a practical and an economical solution." as well. Free tickets to see Soap Stars Do you go ga-ga over John Abbott? Or is Gina Roma more your style? "If the taxpayers New Democrat Roy Grierson filed his nomination papers at the Port Hope returning of- fice June 30. In a recent interview Grierson said job crea- tion was the number one issue facing Canadians in the September 4 election. "I believe it is the small entrepreneurs who are going to create work and reduce our unemployment,' he said. "O ver half of working men and women are employed in plants with 20 or fewer employees. As automation expands, our service industries 'are going to expand also." Grierson said that in order to put men and women to work the un- fair tax burden on mid- dle income earners must be reduced. "In the last few weeks, the Liberals have impos- ed $1.4 billion in con- sumer taxes,'"' Grierson had it, they would be spending it in their own home towns." Grierson pointed out that it was his experience as a beef farmer and a small businessman that made him realize that it is the New Democrats and Ed Broadbent who + will lower unemploy- ment rates and eliminate unfair taxation. The NDP candidate for Durham Nor- thumberland believes his experience will help to make him a spokesman for Canadians like himself in the next parliament. BUYING AN ANNUITY?
