(From page 1) customers come through his door to use his washrooms, often leaving a mess behind them '"We had problems the week before last when they took off a door in the ladies' washroom', he. said angrily in an interview with the Star. "In the mens' wash- room they're contin- ually pulling off the tissue dispenser and most of this damage is being done by non-pay- ing customers." He has a sign posted advising that restaurant facilities are for cust- omers only but he finds people just ignore it. It's the same thing at Scugog Memorial Lib- rary where a similar sign is posted. Child- ren's librarian Linda LeRoy figures about four non-patrons use the library washrooms on the average Saturday but a co-worker insists there are 10 or more. "With the summer crowd, of course, they use the Birdseye Park to the north of us and then don't know where the washrooms are,' Mrs. LeRoy said. Emile Kroonenberg, owner of Emiel's Place, says there's a couple dozen non-customers using his washrooms every Saturday -- more if the weather is good. "Some might buy a coffee or cigarettes but most of them just use our washrooms", he explained. "Sometimes they even use them as changerooms. Both Mr. Kroonen- berg and Mr. Hillier say more washrooms in Pal- mer Park would help, solve their problems. The public wash- rooms at the baseball diamond are open 24 hours a day. The facili- ties at Birdseye Pool are open only during pool hours. At the Latcham Centre, they're open only during the odd special occasion or when somebody is usi the centre. On the surface, there 'appears to be enough washrooms to handle the crowds at the beach, but according to many people who complain, they're just not open, visible or close enough together. The ball diamond washrooms are located at the far south end of the lakefront--the pool washrooms are at the far north end, and since the Latcham Centre facilities are usually closed, there aren't any washrooms 1n between. Many people think there.aren't any period. Minor softball presi- dent Glenys Windsor says park visitors are continually asking her "where the washrooms are" or "are there any washrooms?"' "I hear alot of comp-. laints" she said. '"You feel like going out and - saying, hey, there's washrooms over there because people are defecating right there on the grass. It's dis- gusting". She's also disgusted with the condition of the ball park washrooms, which although they're the responsibility of the Township of Scugog, are often pinned on minor softball's shoulders. "They're open 24 hours which is a pro- blem because I find the young people are going in at all hoyrs of the night and destroying things", Ms. Windsor said. "I find what they need is one person, one young person, to take care of the diamond, the washrooms and the "whole park but especi- ally the washrooms. They're a disgrace". She'd also like to see the washrooms locked up at night to prevent vandalism and more washrooms ouilt. 'For what goes on down there, like Western Days, the park, the beach, tennis and ball games, there really ed. isn't enough," she add- But Ms. Windsor isn't the only person to hear complaints about the park facilities. Scugog Councillor Jack Cottrell says council has heard umpteen complaints each summer, but claims he has heard less complaints this year than any other. "It's a real can of worms", he admitted. The Latcham Centre washrooms were closed to the public years ago following serious van- dalism attacks and Councillor Cottrell doesn't forsee any change in the Latcham Centre washroom policy. "The only way to really handle it would be to get some supervis- ion", he said, but added ~ that supervision for the TT] Washrooms scarce on lakefront building is nearly im- possible with the town- ship's manpower limit- ations and restrictions. He agrees that the opening of Latcham Centre washrooms would help alleviate the problem but he can't see a way of o them without getting into more vandalism. ° He also said that park visitors would continue to use local restaurant facilities even if there were more washrooms on the lakefront. Councillor Cottrell pointed out that if the proposed Township- owned marina is built, public washrooms will be made available but that project could take until next fall to com- plete. Then, if I am convicted of refusing to pay Income Tax, and get a jail sentence, the government will have to pay to keep me in jail. After my release, the government will still not have received the $1,032.03 plus interest, and I have a criminal record. Jobs are hard to find, and with a record, it will be nearly imposs- ible. The only solution is welfare. The govern- ment is going to pay me to live without i and I will still not be paying Income Tax. - I am an individual who enjoys employment and works hard for what he earns. Why should a tax while there are others who use the welfare system and are excused and receive to have to pay income tax if you work but be excused if you live off welfare? What has the government done to earn this tax money? NOTHING! I worked hard for it and I believe I should be able to keep it. They have sent me a bill for something I do not owe! The end result? A working Canadian ving money to pay the government for working; an individ- ual's wages being taken away to pay a debt he does not owe; or another Canadian citizen with a criminal record, forced to live on welfare and not paying income tax because of an unfair government system. And the government is still short of $1,032.08 plus interest. Ironically, in Canada you have to pay to work and if you do not, you could end up in jail. Under the present struc- ture of government, a Canadian is better off living on welfare. Erin S.
