The two teams split the games, and after took time out for these photos. LJ J - 1] { p a Ll = of . tl The Sons of Beaches are a team of Lob Ball players who range in age from 50 years to 64 years of age. The feam played at the Legion diamond last week winning the first game 13 fo 11, then dropping the second to The Sons of Beaches, are a bunch of enthus- iastic ball players with one thing in common. They are all over the age of 50 and love to play baseball. The team was formed in 1979, and since then have travelled all across the province and make annual treks to Florida each year to represent Canada in the Dunedin International Seniors Tournament. The Sons of Beaches play ball for charity, and last year they played 97 games throughout the summer. "This year, says chair- man Bill LaFave, the team will probably play over 100 games". The team plays each Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday in the Toronto area, and then play out of town games on Sat- urdays. You have to be over 50 years of age to play for the Sons of Beaches and currently the average age on the team is 56 years. The oldest member is 64 years old and they have five players over 60 years of age on the team. Recognized for their - good ambassadorship for Canada, the Sons of Beaches are one of only five teams in Toronto that are allowed to wear the special '"'Toronto's 150 Birthday Celebra- tion crests. In the double-header played at the Port Perry Legion ball diamond last Saturday, the Sons of Beaches won the first game by a score of 13 to 11, but the two nine inning games (they usually play seven inn- ing games) proved to be too much for the "old legs", and they dropped this game to Branch 419 by a score of 24 to 11. Gamblers all out of luck The Greenbank Gam- blers went to Niagara Falls this past weekend to compete in the Inter- national Fastball Tour- nament but came home empty handed. They started off strongly in game one and behind the 3 hit pitching of Russ Korbak they defeated the Agin- court Jrs. by a score of 4-1. John Foster and Brian Till led the Gamblers at the plate with 2 hits each with Dennis Romeril, Trevor Till and Greg Rodd each hitting safely once. The second game of the tournament for Greenbank saw them meet the powerful Ash- land Aces from Ohio and their outstanding pitcher, Bob Hunhoff who proceeded to shut out the Gamblers by a 10-0 score. Brian Till was the only Greenbank player to hit safely against the big right hander and he belted a triple to the right field fence. The Ashland pitcher (who hails from Cleve- land, Ohio) proved to be too tough for all the teams in the tourna- ment and the Ohio team won the tournament * Branch 419, by a score of 24 to 11. This year the team will play close to 100 games across Ontario and in the U.S.A. for charity. without giving up a run. In the game against the Ohio squad, the usually excellent defense of the Green- bank team deserted them and they gave up five unearned runs in one inning and the game was over. Their final game was against Grimsby and again the Gambler defense allowed two unearned runs and led to a 3-2 defeat and eliminated them from the tournament. Russ Korbak, Ken Goreski and Roland Osske all saw duty on the Greenbank mound and all pitched very effectively but the un- steadiness of the defense proved to be their downfall. In the Grimsby game the Gambler hits went to Don Beaton, John Foster, Brian Till and Greg Rodd. In league action last week, the Gamblers came up with two shut- out victories and moved into sole possession of second place behind Claremont Legion. On Monday night in Greenbank Park, Ken Goreski tossed a solid 3 hitter at the Zephyr "a"s and shut them out by a 6-0 score. Don Beaton led the Gambler hitter with a three for three night including a line drive home run over the left field fence. Trevor Till had two hits for Greenbank with Neil Rodd, Brian Till and Hugh Johnston gett- ing one each. On Wednesday night in Goodwood, Roland Osske threw a four hitter and shut out the Goodwood team by a 3-0 score. The Gamblers had a total of ten hits in this game with Ray Meis- ner, Trevor Till, John Foster and Greg Rodd each collecting a pair and singles going to Dennis Romeril and Neil Rodd. OASA action gets underway this week with the first game in Greenbank Park this Friday night at 8:00 p.m. (right after the Greenbank Bar-B-Q). Their opponents will be the Zephyr Royals with the return game in Zephyr on Sunday night, July 29th with game time in Zephyr at 7:30 p.m. Girls' soccer - With half the season over the Bantam girls Port Perry Printing Stormers are in first place, two points ahead of Oshawa and Picker- ing with an undefeated record of 6 wins and 3 ties, forty goals for, and 7 against.
