The opening game saw Ken Goreski face the minimum number of batters as he set Ux- bridge down for a 40 Gambler win. During the game the Uxbridge team did collect two singles off Goreski, but Gambler catcher Don Phinney promptly threw "one runner out attempting to steal second base and centre fielder Dennis Romeril erased the second runner coming into second base. But they ran into tough Coll- ingwood squad in the final and went down to defeat 6-0, after beating Bowmanville 3-2 in their first game. Before a large home crowd on Wednesday night Port Perry Legion hosted league leading Oshawa Casey's Senior 'B' squad and was soundly trounced 12-1. Starting pitcher John Annis cruised along allowing single runs in the 2nd and Sth inning before the roof caved in with Casey's scoring 5 times before relief pitcher Lawrie Williams could halt the landslide. Things progressively got worse as Casey's added 5 more runs in the 8th inning. Port replied with a tally in the bottom of the Sth inning to avoid the whitewash. Bob Evans tied it in the 4th with a single to centre and scoring on Jay William's RBI single to right field. Three hits back to back in the 6th inning provid- ed the margin of victory for Sunderland knock- ing Port into the consol- ation bracket. Game two saw Port down a Toronto Indust- rial team 20 on a 2 hitter by John Annis. Annis was never in trouble allowing 2 hits while striking out 15 batters. The semi-final game Sunday morning had Port Legion squaring off against Bethany and coming away with a close 2-1 victory. Legion runs came on a Tim Thompson walk followed by a RBI single from Dave Dickson and a triple by Bob Evans. Bethany fought back when pi' cher Don Tims homered in the 4th inning. Port pitcher John Annis allowed only a walk the rest of the way to gain the victory. Annis allowed 3 hits while striking out 13 batters. The final game saw Port down the Udora Shamrocks 2-1 on a 7th innipg, hases, Jogded Legion bounced twice single by Todd Wilbur. Port opened a 1-0 lead in the 5th inning on a single by Bill Bridge and after advancing to 3rd base was driven in by Rick Evans. Udora tied things in the 6th on a inside the park homer by Gary Curnon. In the bottom of the 7th Dave Dickson led off with a single, Bob Evans bunt- ed safely and Jay Will- iams was hit by the pitch setting the table for William's game winning hit. In league play this week Port hosts Lindfay Merchants on Wednes- day at 8:30 before trav- elling to Lindsay on Thursday. The Legion' boys have a well deser- ved weekend off having played 20 games in 21 days. Their next Tour- nament is July 28-29 in Ottawa. The balance of the Gamblers hits went to Brian Till, Trevor Till, Dennis Romeril and Neil Rodd. The championship game was a real dandy as the Greenbank team met their arch rivals Claremont Legion. Russ Korbak and Darryl Norton hooked up in a pitchers duel with Kor- bak fanning eleven batters and Norton sett- ing down eight Gamb- lers via the strike out Greenbank scored the only two runs of the game in the first inning when lead off batter Dennis Romeril bounc- ed a single over the head of the Claremont third baseman Larry Pilkey and Neil Rodd beat out his sacrifice bunt to put runners on first and second. Brian Till moved the runners to second and third and then clean up hitter Don Beaton laced a double to left centre to score both runners. After the first inning out burst the only other hit the Gamblers coll- ected off Norton was a double in the fourth inning by Trevor Till. Korbak held Clare- mont to two hits by Doug Rowe and Norm McKenzie and was only in danger of losing his shut out in the bottom of the sixth inning when Claremont had runners on second and third with one out. However, an infield out and a strike out preserved the win for the veteran right hander and gave the Gamblers the tourna- ment championship. In league action last Monday night in Green- bank Park the Gamb- lers downed the Zephyr Royals 7-1 behind the excellent pitching of Roland Osske, and kept in the thick of the league pennant race. Osske fanned nine batters, walked four and did not allow a hit as he picked up the win. The Gamblers attack was led by John Foster and Brian Lee with two hits each while Neil Rodd, Ken Goreski, 'Greg Rodd, Trevor Till, Hugh Johnston and Dennis Romeril each picked up a hit. Dennis Romeril had an out of the park home run. In addition to league action the 0.A.S.A. play downs are just around the corner and the Gamblers management is hoping to play a first round O.A.S.A. match at Greenbank on Friday, July 27th, the night of the big Greenbank Bar- b-que. If this game can be arranged it would pro- vide some excellent "after dinner' entert- ainment for the people attending the bar-b-q. This week end the Greenbank team travels to Niagara Falls to attend the four day International Tourna- ment with teams from Canada and the United States.
