10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 19, 1984 Bumper strawberry crop is better late than never These days Erich Mair is keeping one eye on the heavens and the other on his eight acres of strawberry plants. + 'Right now, we need some more warm weather and some rain," he told the Star last week as he looked over the rows and rows of lush green plants, many of them topped with white flowers. Mr. Mair has been growing strawberries on his farm off the 10th Con- cession west of old Sim- coe Street between Port Perry and Seagrave for the last ten years. And before that, he grew a crop on a farm near Pickering until he was expropriated for the air- port that never was. | He says that while the strawberry crop is later than usual this June, he predicts it will be a bumper crop, judging from the number of blossoms and maturing berries on the plants. Strawberries normally are at their peak by mid- June, but because of the cool spring, Mr. Mair ex- expects they won't be ready for picking until June 25 or so. And then, the season will last about Headquarters for " "\ TRIN \ 'Freeman Formalwear | (jugonge Ucn' Vea Lid. PORT PERRY PLAZA STORE HOURS TO CELEBRATE WE HAVE A SPECIAL OFFER. As just about everyone knows, there is nothing quite like fresh strawberries, whether swimming in fresh cream, covered with ice cream, baked into cakes and pies, or just eaten whole right off the vine, they are delicious. There are numerous strawberry growers in the Port Perry and Scugog area, and most farms are pick-your- own. Mr. Mair says he will have some picked for sale to those wi'o are unable to get down 11 the rows to pick their own, but anyone with a little energy can fill six quarts in about 20 minutes of easy picking. He charges about 60 cents per quart, a little extra if you don't have your containers. Mr. Mair does not ship strawberries to retail outlets because he can't seem to find a picking crew. So while he's hoping for more warm weather to help bring the berries For Grades one to eight YMCA offers tutoring The Durham Region Family YMCA is offer- ing an excellent summer tutoring program in Math, Reading Com- prehension, Spelling, Language and Phonics for children currently registered in Grades 1 through 8 for the Port Perry area. That's what happened last year when that sear- ing heat wave made it uncomfortable for a lot of people to go berry picking. So all you lovers of fresh strawberries, be patient for another week or so. Your favourite time of year is almost here. Students come for three hours per week for either Math or Reading Com- prehension. (Reading classes include work in Spelling, language and/or Phonics if re- quested). Thus, if a stu- dent is enrolled in both Math and Reading, he/she would have six hours of classes per week. The cost per subject, per child is $40 with a dis- count being offered for the second child in a family enrolled in the tutoring program.
