FUKI PERKY DIAK -- 1uesudy, JUlle 14, 1704 -- 4 Request made for committee Scugog Township council has asked the Kawartha Conservation Authority to help set up a "working committee" which would examine and gather information on problems associated with Lake Scugog. - The request for such a committee was made at the council meeting Mon- day afternoon which was attended by Kawartha Authority manager Ian McNab. Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor told councillors that he has received a letter from federal En- vironment Minister Charles Caccia stating that Parks Canada is not prepared to take any steps to keep the water levels in Scugog up this summer. "I'm a little disap- pointed with the letter," said Mayor Taylor. 'I had been hoping that they (Parks Canada) would at least take some small measures to try and keep the water levels in the lake," he said. Concern over the levels was expressed at a Everson NSURANCE BROKERS LIMITED 193 QUEEN ST PORT PERRY (416) 985 7306 ALL LINES OF GENERAL INSURANCE VICTORIA LL] apne Since i844 13Y4 5 Yr. However, from Mr. Caccia's letter, it ap- pears as if the federal authorities are going to ignore the concerns that have been expressed locally. At the meeting Mon- day afternoon, Mayor Taylor said the commit- tee should take a look at all problems associated with the lake, including water levels, weeds and the quality of the water. He suggested that such a committee would meet every couple of months, and primarily would gather information that could be used to help cor- rect problems when they arise. Along with members from Scugog council and other municipalities, there could be reps from the MNR, the Kawartha Conservation Authority, the Trent-Severn Com- mission (which has con- trol over the water levels in Scugog) and the Ministry of Agriculture. Members of council agreed that setting up this committee would be a good idea and sup- ported the suggestion. Referring to the water levels in Lake Scugog, councillor Lawrence Malcolm said in his opi- nion it is not so much a question of raising the water, but keeping the levels from dropping too low in dry summer months. He told council that he visited the dam at Lindsay on June 2, and found that water was be- ing released at a rapid rate. Scout Hall (From page 2) much money she has". "If the parents get involved in fundraising, ~ we've solved the pro- blem and we don't have to turn anyone away," Mr. Dearling countered. "Maybe it's just my feelings that the parents don't care. But there's a lot of people here to- night, for no reason, if their parents don't care. Approximately 25 out of 100 parents showed up at the meeting and many who attended felt they were being rail- roaded into jobs they didn't have time for. One man said he didn't even know help was needed until he went to the meeting. Mr. Dear- ling admitted the organ- ization suffered from communication pro- blems. "The main objective here is the kids,"' he repeated. "But without the parent's involve- ment, we're going nowhere. Nowhere fast'. The family settled in Reach Township more than 150 years ago. Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor, Regional chairman Gary Herrema, several Township councillors and former Ontario County administrator Bill Manning were on hand for the ceremony.
