See story for details. Ashburn News by Mrs. Rose Heron The Ashburn group of the W.M.S. held their June meeting last Wed- nesday evening at the home of Ruby Bryant a Port Perry. The Pr dent, Bernice Gardner, conducted the meeting. Florence Ashton gave the worship service, she began with a lovely poem, "God's Way" and based her service on the thought "I Almost Didn't'. The study for the evening was given by Chrissie McKinney, taken from the study book 'The Parables are a Mirror' and Chrissie gave us many helpful thoughts. A lovely lunch was served by the hostess and a visit was enjoyed. 'Mrs. Dorothy Tunney of Kississimmi, Florida visited with her sister, Evelyn Lynde last week. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hamilton of Toronto also Misses Katie and Amy Daw of Whitby, visited with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Daw recent- ly. Ted and Rose Heron enjoyed a trip to New York City. The middle-aged father of two has just opened Paul's Shoe Repair, a bright little shop located just behind Don Forder's Insurance office on Water Street. He comes to Port Perry with a lifetime of shoe repair experience (he started apprenticing with his uncle when he was nine years old) and plans to settle here as soon as he can buy a house for his family. "One day I was com- ing here to buy some- thing and I find out you need a shoe repair here and I was excited because it was a small town and I always dreamed of working in a small town', he says with a thick accent. Mr. Roy Porter was on a business trip to Nova Scotia last week and also visited his father and other rela- tives there. Doug and Florence Ashton attended the Annual Iris Show of the Canadian Iris Society at Hillcrest Mall, Rich- mond Hill last Saturday and also visited with Jean and Cecil Vicers at Fergus. Mr. and Mrs. W. Gardner attended the 65th Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Ormis- ton at St. Thomas and also visited Mr. and Mrs. James Cunnington and family and Mr. and Mrs. Ron Stuart and family all of Guelph. Mr. and Mrs. Reg Doubt of Elora and Mr. and Mrs. Bill McAnd- lers and daughter, Karen, visited with the Herons on the weekend. The Brooklin Horti- culture Society will be holding their Annual Iris Show in Burns Church Hall on June 18th. Everyone is welcome. The Kirk Guild will sponsor an appreciation night in the Church Hall on Wednesday, June 27th at 8 p.m. The Sweet Adelines Quartette Rythm in 2's, also a surprise musical group will be there to entertain and there will be delic- ious strawberry short- cake to enjoy also. This is for everyone who supported the guild in any way throughout the year. The Sanctuary of Burns Church was taste- fully decorated with three beautiful arrange- ments of peonys, lilacs, Iris and Snowballs last Sunday morning. The thoughts and hymns throughout the service was the 'Holy Spirit'. The Choir sang 'Sweet Spirit' and Rev. McEntyre's message was titled 'The Wor- shippers God Wants'. The Scripture was read by Lois Daw and Ronald Ashton and the ushers for the day were Barbara Humphrey and Aldene Wick. Next Sunday is Father's Day.
