Japanese company to manufacture lighters PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 5, 1984 -- 3 vy Unique Eastern ceremony East met west last Thursday afternoon on a lonely wind-swept hill in a rural corner of Ux- bridge Township. But unlike the cliche of never the twain shall "meet, this occasion was a joyous one with smiles, handshakes, bowing and polite speeches. The event was the official ground-breaking ceremony for construc- tion of a new factory, which when finished early next year, will manufacture disposable lighters for the Canad- ian market. The factory will be built by Tokai Seiki, a Japanese company which now has 14 factor- ies world wide and turns out some 70 million lighters and parts each month for use in more than 60 countries. The fact that this 30,000 square foot factory will be built in a very rural area of Uxbridge Township represents something of a coup for the munici- pality dnd Durham Region. And this explains why politicians like Uxbridge Mayor William Ballinger, Dur- ham Region chairman Gary Herrema and Ont- ario Trade Minister Frank Miller were smil- ing so widely at the ground breaking cere- mony last week. They are hopeful that if this unique industrial project proves success- ful, it could lead to similar industrial expansion in the future. And just as the project , itself is unique for a small municipality like Uxbridge Township, the ceremonies last week . were also unique, noth- ing like the routine sod-turnings that herald the "start of construc- tion. Tokai International president Tomio Nitta spoke through an inter- preter in glowing terms about the co-operation he has received from Stuck in the mud (From page 1) other firefighters. The youngster got into the difficulty about 100 feet from solid ground. L.L.B.O. Event -GORGON FOUNDATION PRESENTS...
