22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed. May 23, 1984 Did you ever play '"'capture the flag" when you were a kid? : Sure you did. Rem- ember how it went? Form into two teams and try to take the other guys' flag before they got your's. Well, a variation of that kid's game is being played these days by grown-ups, and Steve Laurion, who holds a franchise for "The Great Canadian Adventure Game" says it's proving very pop- ular, and is a whole lot of fun. The objective of the game played by big kids hasn't changed: capture the other team's flag and then get safely back . to home base. But to make things a little more exciting, the players can deck them- selves out in blotchy camouflage suits and Nal - 4 I { TROPHIES } ] and A EAGRAING ) DO-NO's RECORD, CRAFT I & HOBBY WORLD 0 Queen St., Port Perry 3 § 985-2839 SN 2 B00 tums pom oath carry CO2 pistols which fire e pellets filled with coloured dye. If you get "shot", you're out of action for 15 minutes. Laurion has leased 130 acres of ravine land on Highway 115 r the 401, and since he started actively promoting the 'Adventure Game", a couple of weeks ago, he says he's had all kinds of positive response. '"The weekends are already starting to get booked up", he told the Star in an interview recently. Basically, the game is played this way. Two teams are formed of about 15 people each. And within a marked-off "field" of 30 acres, they set out to capture the other flag and get it back to their home base. The terrain is rugged with bush, ponds, woods and lots of cover for stalking players. The CO2 pistol, which ~ has an effective range of about 60 feet is used to put the other team members out of the game for the 15 minutes. A game lasts about two hours, or shorter if one team is successful in capturing the other | fee Laurion says the game appeals to a wide cross section of individ- uals, including women. In fact, he says he is encouraging couples to WEIGHT WATCHERS' oo% of Gel® < with @Qudck Start Not only does WEIGHT WATCHERS give you a new way of eating but also a new way of life. "Game" participate. Just why would 30 grown-ups pay good money to spend a Sat- urday afternoon chasing each other around the woods, shooting colour- ed dye pellets and trying to bring home the enemy flag? For the fun of it, says Laurion. It's great exer- cise, requires team- work, a sense of strat- egy and provides a lot of excitement. A brochure published by 'The Great Adven- ture Game' says the game "turns your imagination into an experience." The broc- hure goes on to say '"'there are very few outdoor activities that include many things people are always look- ing for." The CO2 pellets are safe, but they do hurt a little, especially when fired from close range. As a precaution against eye injury, a player is not supposed to aim for the head and goggles are mandatory. Laurion, 22, who is from Enniskillen north of Bowmanville, admits that "The Adventure may not be everyone's cup of tea, and he shrugs at the moral and ethical implications of adults running around trying to "Shoot" each other. "I don't think we are going to corrupt anyone. Adult version of game the kids used to play These people are all adults (no one under 18 is allowed to play) and there is nothing vicious about the way it is played', he said. Laurion said he became familiar with the game at Kleinburg, near Toronto, where as many as 500 people are playing each week. After graduating from Queens this spring with a degree in engineering, he began to look into the possibility of a franchise for this area. Laurion says he has always been a bit of an entrepreneur, and looks upon this venture as "strictly a business for me". The cost for one person is $35, and that includes three '""games", the use of the CO2 pistol and 40 rounds of pellets for each game. He will even rent the camouflage suits at $5 per day. Laurion says that while his customers so far are mostly coming in groups, individuals are welcome, but he is being careful to screen people who might take things a little too ser- iously. "Basically, it's a form of recreation, a chance to have some fun, get some fresh air and exercise,'"' he says. For more inform- ation, give him a call at 263-8811. Relax folks, it's just a game No, Port Perry was not the scene of a guerrilla invasion last week when Steve Laurion stopped by to publicize the 'Great Cana- dian Adventure Game." It's like the kids game of capture the flag and is proving popular with adults. That pistol, by the way, fires only C02 pellets filled with coloured dye, and the camouflage suit adds to the reality of the game.
