Ril a A a AR aan VR vw PRER va TY A a RRR 28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 8, 1984 Is Seagrave local answer to the Windy City? Seagrave and Area News by Marilyn Beacock The city of Chicago has for years been affectionately known as the "Windy city" but with the tremendously high winds we exper- ienced in this part of Southern Ontario early last week, we too may be able to lay claim to that dubious title as well! Shingles, TV towers, trees and an assortment of other items certainly took quite a beating in the wake of the wind storm and most of us spent the later days of the week clearing away "the debris. The Scouting organiz- ation has been operating in this vicinity for several years but due in part to the decreasing interest of parents in "helping out as leaders of the various groups this organization locally is in danger of non-existence. A general meeting of the Greenbank-Seagrave Group Committee has been arranged for Wed. May 16 at 8:00 p.m. and all parents with children involved in Beavers, Cubs or Scouts are urgently requested to attend this meeting. The future of these groups depends.on you. Please make an effort to be there. Our annual Beef Dinner is now part of history and was a decid- ed success! It was delightful to see so many former Seagrave residents return to visit with us on that occasion. Many thanks to every- one in any way contri- buted to the success of this dinner. A substant- ial profit was realized and will be used to help with the financial re- sponsibilities the church has. Jane Jones and her son Kevin have recently sold their home and have now taken up residence in Port Perry. We wish them happiness in their new home. The community wish- es to extend a warm welcome to Mr. and Mrs. Johnson and family who are present- ly moving into the Jones home. We trust they will enjoy the hospitality of our little village. Last Sunday Don and I and the boys joined with. Mr. and Mrs. John Foster and family, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Rodd and family, Mr. and Mrs. Murray Rodd and Mrs. Marion Perigoe attended a surprise birthday party for Mr. Ken Rodd in honour of his 60th birthday. Con- gratulations! We were sorry to hear about the death of the late Mr. James Barr on Wednesday. Mr. Barr was a long-time resident of Toronto but in recent years he has resided at the Port Perry Villa -Nursing Home complex in Port Perry. Funeral services were held in Toronto on Saturday. Sincerest sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Bill Barr and family upon the loss of a loving father, grand- father and great-grand- father. Sympathy is shared Treat Mom to Divielee this weekend and a FERRITE TOW RN OR Re ie RR pe iio also with the Stone family in the loss of the late Mr. Wilbert Stone last week. Mr. Stone leaves many family and friends to mourn his loss. Our thoughts are with both the Barr and Stone families during .their bereavement. The congregation of Seagrave United Church wishes to express their apprecia- tion to Mrs. Mildred Rodd for her generous donation which resulted from the sale of one of her homemade quilts at Mrs. Stone's auction last Saturday. Six gen- erations of this family have been members of this congregation and it was Mrs. Rodds way of saying 'Thanks' for kindnesses shown to her family over the years. With the advent of warm weather the bats, baseballs and gloves emerge from their winter storage areas and are carted to the nearest baseball dia- mond to be put into service once again. Some of our local ball enthusiasts have already been getting a few practises in. Ed and Heather Wein- hold have generously consented to coach a young girls team this season so if you have a young lady in your house who enjoys play- ing ball and is between a a a. the ages of 10 and 12, please call the Wein- holds and register her. There will also be a registration sheet at the Seagrave Country Store to sign if you wish. The time slot for this age group will be Tuesdays at 6:30 with the first practise beginning on May 29 at the north diamond at the Sea- grave Park. The ladies Turkey Power Lob Ball team are looking for some experienced local ball players. If you are interested in becoming a member of the team they invite you to call 985-8321 for more information. As a member of the Seagrave "news team" I would like to make a request of the local coaches if I may. We would very much appreciate it if you or someone especially appointed for this pur- pose, could phone us with the ball scores and any highlights of your games so we can share it with our readers. The kids, in particular, really enjoy seeing their names in the column if they have hit a home run or did a super terrific job of pitching or catching for a game. This request, of course, concerns all of our local ball teams.
