In 1980, Americans spent an estimated $80 million in health food stores for herbal teas. Many people are looking forward for - natural, refreshingly tas- ty beverages at a resonable cost that don't contain caffeine. Some herbal teas fit that description. Medical folklore:gives remedies, a reputation. 'medicines because that 'was all we had. In the: early part of the 20th cen- tury, scientific study eliminated ineffective herbs. Others such as quinine have gradually been replaced by syn- thetic compounds that do a better job. Scientific research continues to give us new and useful compounds such as chymopapain from the papaya plant and digitalis from the fox- glove plant. There are many books extolling the benefits of herbs and herbal teas. The herbal teas are reputed to cure everything that could possibly ail you, all without side effects. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Read closely, there is probably a disclaimer to protect the author from legal suits should you become ill following his advice. This should be your warning to carefully evaluate the information. Since herbal teas have been used for centuries all over the world, doesn't that mean they are safe? While some herbal teas such as mint and rosehip offer delicious alternatives to coffee and tea, not all herbal teas are safe nor should any herbal tea be consumed in large amounts over a long period of time. CAUTIONS 1. Don't try to treat yourself for medical pro- blems with herbal tea. You are making several dangerous assumptions. You assume you know what's wrong, the type and amount of tea to drink, and that there are no side effects. A 25 year old woman consulted her gynecologist because of abnormal mentrual bleeding. The case was puzzling until it was learned that she had taken a tonic of herbal tea containing tonka beans, meliot and sweet woodruff. These are sources of coumarins which reduce the ability of the blood to clot. TIT NF. VF YP YY TY 2. An elderly couple in Washington, B.C. were recommended comfrey tea for their ar- thritis by a health spa. The wife picked what she - thought was comfrey and made tea for lunch. They both died within 24 hours. The tea was brewed from foxglove, the source of -digitalis, .a powerful heart drug. Some com- frey can' contain pyriolizidine alkaloids which can cause liver damage and cancer in rats. Therefore, comfrey is not recommended for internal use as in tea. 3. Ragweed and Chamomile are from the same plant family. 4. Some herbal teas con- tain toxins that affect the central nervous system or cause death. A young man who drank a tea from jimsonweed suf- fered hallucinations and became totally disoriented. He wandered barefoot in the ANALDA GARDEN CENTRE scare off the 'voodoo people." 5. Allergic or toxic reac- tions may occur. Chamomile or fennel tea "are not recommended for colic. - 7. Use herbal teas in moderation. Even or- dinary foods contain tox- ins that if consumed in extremely large amounts would lead to serious health problems. For example,. cabbage contains goitrogens that could cause goitre.
