18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 3, 1984 John Harman didn't waste this fine scoring oppor- tunity during the third period of openin game of the all- Ontaio Bantam final between Port Perry and St. Mary's. Port Perry put the game away in the third period and One more victory for all-Ontario title Pee Wee B's keep rolling along The George Stone Real Estate Pee Wee "B' team continues on its way to an all-Ontario championship. After finally disposing of Ernestown the previous weekend by a very convincing 13-4 score, our boys met the western contenders, Parkhill for 2 games back to back this last weekend. On Sat. March 31 the Malmont Atoms entered the Oshawa Atom Tour- nament and won their first game with a con- vincing 6 to 2 victory over the Oshawa L.NH.L. Hawks. Jan Heyes opened the scor- ing for Port on a nice set up by Scott Menzies. The first period ended 1 to 1. Scott Menzies then put Port out front again with Jan Heyes and Dan Sluggett assisting. Jason Cochrane then tallied for Port with Steve Staniland assist- ing. Oshawa narrowed the gap to 3 to 2 but Port scored the last three goals of the game in the following order. Jody Logan fired a nice George Stone - 4 Parkhill - 1 The home team start- ed in high gear right away and within 3 minutes found them- selves one goal up when Jim Vernon floated one past the Parkhill goalie from a Brian Appleby pass. Strong rushing by Bradbury and Halligan was splitting the opposition's defence and Jason Cochrane and Jan Heyes figuring on the assists. Finally Jan Heyes scored the last goal with Scott Menzies and Brett Puckrin earn- ing a couple of assists. Shawn Larocque and Carey Labuik split the net minding duties. On Sunday April 1 the Malmont Atoms played their second game and lost a heart breaker to the Oshawa Red Wings 6 to 5 in sudden death overtime. Port got behind 2 to 0 early but Jan Heyes scored from Mark Andrews on the power play. Port fell behind again by two then Jan Heyes scored his second of the day unassisted to cut Oshawa's lead to 3 to 2. Oshatva scored next and took a 4 to 2 lead into the third period. Port then scored three straight it paid off when Phil Teno pushed one through to Vernon who then laid it across the goal for Matt Durward to slam it home. Great runs by Jerry Douma and Vernon were caus- ing utter confusion in a badly disoriented Park- hill team. The second period saw Parkhill pick up the pace and claim a goal Atoms lose tough times starting with Jody logan from Mark Andrews then Mark Andrews tied the game with Jody Logan and Greg Fitzgerald assist- ing. Mark Andrews put Port out in front for the first time with 56 seconds left in regul- ation time and Steve Staniland and Jan Heyes were credited with assists. The Red Wings pulled their goalie in favour of the extra attacker and it paid off when they sent the game into overtime with 11 seconds left on the clock. Oshawa end- ed the hard fought battle with 1.06 left in the overtime period and Port came home empty handed. Carey Labuik and Shawn Larocque shared the net duties again and both kids did a super job. Sport Bantam A's win the first one 6-2 back but solid defence by Dave Akkerman and Brian Appleby aided by Neil Mark and Ron Davis calmed things down very well. The tempo of the game got even faster in the third period and the shouting of the spec- tators turned into shrieks when Jerry Douma took a Mark and scored a superb goal. With less than a minute to go Port Perry put the icing on the cake when Sean Bradbury pushed the puck through to Jim Vernon who made it 4-1 for the George Stone boys. George Stone Real Estate - 4 Parkhill - 1 The Port Perry team took up where they left off on Saturday and roasted the Parkhill goal. Bradbury, Vernon, Halligan and Douman came close on many occasions. When it seemed that their goalie was unbeatable a Paul Teno pass was picked up by Jerry Douma who backhanded a beauty into the net. The second period was a repeat of the first with young Clint Mc- Cann, the goalie from Parkhill, pulling off save after save. Troy McCully on several occasions showed his speed and had one come off the post. Douman picked up his second of - came out victorious by a 6-2 score. The ome was played at the Scugog Arena Sunday evening and the series now moves to St. Mary's for two games this coming weekend. (See story) the day when he collect- ed a Halligan pass and weaved his way goal- ward to make it 2-0. Shortly after Jim Vernon did his usual thing by scoring while his side was short hand- ed from a Neil Mark pass. Matt Durward who had had a very strong game pushed the puck to Ron Halligan who scored with only a minute gone in the 3rd period. Both sides seemed to be feeling tired and with some frustration begin- ning to show on the Parkhill players, tempers started flaring up. However, Port seemed to be taking all the penalties and tremendous defensive work by Dave Akkeman and Brian Appleby saw us through. Jamie Brown who had his usual "Mr. Cool' per- formance in goal for the last few games was rested and as bad luck would have it, his sub- stitute young Dave Bux- cey had hardly been in net a few minutes when a Port player accident- ally knocked the puck past him during a goal- mouth melee. All the Port Perry boys played very well and combined well as a team. Their fighting spirit and all-action style should carry them through at Parkhill next weekend. TERN Sparked by some excellent goal-tending by Bill Eade, the Port Perry Bantam A's open- ed the all-Ontario final with a solid 6-2 victory over St. Mary's at the Scugog Arena Sunday evening. Eade was especially sharp in the early going of the first period as the visitors enjoyed the 'better of the play. The game was score- less until the mid-point of the second frame when St. Mary's notch- ed the first goal. But three minutes later, Dave Burnett made the score 1-1 on a fine individual effort as he broke in alone on a sharp angle and drilled a hard rising shot that just caught the top left corner of the St. Mary's cage. Burnett, then put the Bantams ahead for good on a set-up from Chris Skura, and then just 12 seconds after that, Port Perry grabbed a 3-1 lead when Scott Feasby took a pass from John Har- man and ripped a waist high slap shot from just inside the blue line that beat the St. Mary's goalie cleanly. The visitors came back to make the score close at 3-2 before the. end of the second period, but the mom- entum of the game had shifted and Port Perry owned the final frame. Dave Culbert hit on a solo effort just 57 seconds into the final period, and then a few minutes later Bob Goble slid a perfect goal- mouth pass to Harman who made no mistake with a wide open net staring him in the face. Steve Durham round- ed out the scoring late in the game on a set-up "from Feasby and Greg Stapleton. Actually, the game was closer than the 6-2 score indicates and could have gone either way until Port Perry seemed to take the momentum late in the second frame, Eade was instrumental in keeping his team in the contest. St. Mary's is a big strong club who move the puck well and have a couple of really flashy skaters. They will be tough as the series progresses. The next two games in this series for the all- Ontario Crown are slatef for this coming weekend in St. Mary's. The first will go on Saturday at 7:30 P.M. and the second on Sun- day with face-off at 1:30 P.M. St. Mary's is located near Stratford.
