Blackstock Area News by Joyce Kelly Several families have suffered deaths in the pist week. Sincere sympathy is extended to Grant Monk and family on the untimely passing of his wife, Mrs. Monk. Also to Wifred Vine and family on the passing of his wife Mrs. Eva Vine. Both of 'these funerals were held in Port Perry last week. Also sym- pathy is extended to Mrs. Edith McLaughlin and family on the sudden passing of her brother Mr. Hugh Murphy. Mrs. Albert Beacock, a former resident of this area passed away last week in her 98th year. Several from this area attended her funeral which was in Lindsay on Wednesday. Those from Blackstock who attend- ed were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Ferguson, Mrs. Lloyd Wright, Mr. and Mrs. Harry McLaughlin and Mrs. K. Samells. On Sunday Lawrence and Linda McLaughlin, Lynn and Brent held a family dinner in honour of Harry McLaughlin's 80th birthday. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Harry McLaughlin and Mr. and Mrs. Glover Ross of Tavistock. In the evening they came to visit Harry's sister Mrs. Alma Taylor who had been unable to attend the dinner due to the blizzard. Many happy returns, Harry. The blizzard on Sun- day certainly changed a great number of plans for many families. It was the type of day that was much better spent inside looking out at the storm than being out on roads, possibly involved in some of the many serious traffic accidents. A meeting of the Scugog Beautification Committee will meet on Wednesday March 21 from 7-9:30 p.m. at the Railroadhouse Motel, Port Perry. The group is looking for a Director from this area. For more information call 985-7512. | On Wednesday evening a meeting was held to make plans for the celebration for events in this area to 'celebrate Ontario's Bi- centennial and also Cartwright"s Sesqui- centennial (150 years) which are both happen- ing in 1984. This comm- ittee heard many ambitious plans that will be carried out at the Cartwright Central Public School. There will be an Old Home Weekend with many events held in Black- stock on Oct. 13 and 14th. Mark this on your calendar to be sure it is clear for the celebra- tions over that weekend. There will be another meeting on April 4 that is open to the public. Sorry to report that Walter Wright had the misfortune to fall from a load of hay and broke his hip. He is currently in Oshawa Hospital but ideas hopes to be soon moved back to Port Perry 'Hospital. Geroge Cochrane is recuperat- ing from his heart pro- blems and Roger Simmons from his breathing difficulties, and Carl Delong had surgery all in Oshawa. Glad to report that Jessie Gunter is home following the back surgery she underwent recently. Her son Mr. and Mrs. Jack Gunter of Ottawa spent the week- end with Blake and Jessie Gunter and visit- ed other relatives in the area. Although many people have found this winter very severe, one Cart- wright family has found it just great. The Choro- stecki's have all enjoyed a marvellous ski season. kendall is a member of the Kawartha Peaks Nancy Greene Racing Team. Christopher is a member of the Mount- ain Dew team finishing as semi-finalist. Chris- topher also won the Kawartha Peaks Area Racing Championship Trophy for the 8-12 year old division. Congratu- lations boys. Carole and Ed topped off the season with a Ski Week in Killington, Vermont where they travelled with Carole"s relative Michael and Kelly MacKendrick. On Friday and Sat- 'urday evenings the students of Cartwright High School presented their three one-act plays. The Alikats had their play 'Breaking up is Hard to Do", the Ook- presented A Private Affair and the Tigers had Happy end- ing as their play. On Saturday two judges Cathy Robb and John 'Mike Foote chose the winning play and the winning actors and actresses. Carol Lewerentz was chosen as best actress, 2nd went to Kim Bullock and third was Lynn Mc- Laughlin Honourable Mentions were given to Tara Bailey and Debbie VanCamp. The boys prizes went to Chris- topher Rooney as first, second and Ralph De- Jong winning third prize. Honourable mentions were given to Brian VanCamp and Dwayne Bryant.
