K-- 18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March ¢, 1984 Sports Port Perry Tweens win the gold Tournament victory The Chris Allen Aluminum Tweens of Port Perry captured the C Ringette fourna- ment gold medals at an event held in Oshawa recently. Midget B's hit their stride to go one up on Stirling On February 24 the Canadian Tire: Midget B's hosted Uxbridge for the 6th game of the play- offs. The series was tied at 5 points apiece before the game started and that was all the points Uxbridge would get. Port Perry won this game 3 to 1 on the strength of some good goaltending by Steve Langille and some timely goal scoring. Scoring for Port were Darren Cearns assisted by Willie Edwards and Andy Systma. Jim Maw from Mike Fluke and Chris Saulnier and Chris Saulnier from Ron Brown. The next game was the 7th and all Port needed was a tie but coaches Mike Adam and Wayne Fox had the team all fired up to go for the win. This was Port's best game of the year as they came out lying and went home with a 4 to 0 win and 9 point to 5 series win. Scoring for Port was Ron Brown, Jay Van Camp, Mike Fluke and Tim Maw. With this win Port advanced to the semi-finals against Stirling. TARA RE ARRAN CREE A Port travelled to Stirl- ing for the first game on Saturday March the 3rd. Port did not have one of their better games and still managed an easy 8 to 2 victory. Scoring for Port was Mike Fluke with 2 goals and 3 assists; Jay Van Camp with 2 goal and 1 assist; and 1 assist; Nick Cracknell 1 goal; Tim Maw 1 goal and 1 assist; Willy Edwards with 1 goal. Assists went to Chris Saulnier with 3, _ Ron Brown with 2, Karl Darren Cearns 1 goal / Durham with 1, Chris Lane with 1 and Andy Systma with 1. Next game for Port is March 11 at 6:00 in Port Perry. Port Perry Chris Aluminum Tweens . capped an excellent ringette season by winning the Ontario Central Region- al a id Ringette championship tourna- ment in Oshawa on the Feb. 25th and 26th week- end. The local team was facing a tough schedule as they had to play three games on Saturday in their division. At 8 o'clock morning the Tweens played the Lindsay girls and as was expected a hard fought game was played. The Port Perry team won by a score of 14-8. Kelly Calloway led the scoring with five goals followed by Jenny Blanchard with four goals and Connie Norton with a pair with a single goal by Michelle Beare and Jackie Durham. In the second game of the day, the Port Perry Tweens played the Oshawa Optimist and were. upset as Oshawa scored with one second left on the clock to win a close 8-7 game. Michelle Beare had four goals in a losing cause and Jenny Blanchard added two along with Kelly Calloway with a single. Rachel Traynor, Vicki Schryburt and Jackie Durham had assists. This loss put the local Tweens in a "must win"' situation for the third game of the day. In the final game of the "round robin" series the girls played Picker- ing and were not to be denied as they won by a 12-7 score. Kelly Callo- way again led the way Port Atoms to meet Uxbridge On Monday, Feb. 27 the Malmont Farms Atoms trecked over to Stouffville for a play-off game and Port came home with a big 3 to 2 victory. This was the first win for Port over Stouffville this year in 6 matches. There was end to end action all thru the first period but some great saves at both ends of the ice kept the game scoreless. Midway in the second period after some good forechecking in the Stouffville zone, the puck came back to Steve Staniland at the right point from Jeff Parry and Jason Coch- rane and Steve fired a low hard shot through a maze of legs into the Clippers net for the first goal. Six minutes later still in the second period Port was killing off a penalty when Mark Andrews scored short- handed from Jan Heyes. The Clippers scored in the first minute of the third period to close the gap to 2 to 1 for Port. Then with Port on the power play halfway through the third Mark Andrews scored his second of the game from Jason Cochrane and Jan Heyes. The Clippers scored on a power play with a minute and a half left in the game to make it 3to 2. Then they pulled their goalie in favour of the extra attacker and what an action packed final minute but Port was not to be denied this time and held on for the win. Carey Labiuk went the distance in net for the victory. Mark Andrews EER EERREN EE IN IY reached the 100 point plateau in only 51 games this year which is quite an accomplishment at any age level. Congrat- ulations Mark and the Port Atoms on a great game. 3-2 WIN On Friday March 2 the Malmont Atoms hosted Port Hope in the 8th and final round robin playoff game and Port Perry took the game by a 3 to 2 margin. Port Perry fell behind early in the first period when Port Hope opened the scoring but Jan Heyes evened it up when he scored on a great effort while down on his knees just outside the crease. Mike Feasby and Jason Cochrane assist- ed on the first goal. Jan Heyes then got Port's second goal a short time later when he broke in from the blue line and fired a high wrist shot after being sent away by Dan Sluggett and Mike Feasby. Early into the third period Port Perry went ahead 3 to 1 when Dan Sluggett picked the puck out of a scramble and moved across behind the Port Hope net then tucked the puck in the open side of the net and Scott Menzies earned an assist on Danny's goal. With 13 seconds left in the game, Port Hope got a power play goal and it ended 3 to 2 for Port Perry. The Malmont Atoms finished the round robin with 6 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie for 13 of a possible 16 points and now move on to play Uxbridge in the playoffs. on Saturday 6 goals and elle Beare had 3, Jenny Blanchard 2, wih a single goal to Jackie Durham. The Port Perry girls by virtue of the most goals scored in the round robin series were declared first place winners in their division. * On Sunday morning Port Perry faced the second place team in the other division, the Oshawa "B"' team. In this semi-final game, goaltender Kerri- Allen stole the show as she stopped the Oshawa team "cold" and earned a shut-out as her team- mates went on to a 9-0 win. Kelly Calloway, Jackie Durham, Jenny Blanchard and Michelle Beare all had two goals each with Rachel Tray- nor adding a single goal. Vicki Schryburt had three assists with Connie Norton adding two and Brenda Poirier one. This win set the stage for a return game with Lindsay who had defeat- ed Ajax in the other semi-final game. This game as was expected was another "Shoot- out" as both teams went to the offense with end to end action. Kelly Call- oway again led the offense with seven goals to match Lisa Hutton of Lindsay who also fired 7 for her team. The differ- ence in this game was the strong play of all the Port Perry players as Connie Norton and Jenny Blanchard added. two goals each with a special mention of Jackie Durham who had 4 assists with Connie Norton, Rachel Traynor and Vicki Schryburt each getting two assists. The final score of their championship 'game was 11-9 for Port Perry. This champion- ship winning was well earned for the Port Perry Tweens with goals coming in large numbers from all the forwards. This win was a complete team victory with special mention to the strong goal-tending throughout the Tourna- ment by Kerri Allen and an outstanding display of defense by Michelle Beare, Paige Smith, Brenda Poirier and Joanne Desautels. Hard work by the girls earned them the Regional "C" Championship. Well done girls!! Petites lose to Whitby On Sunday, March 4 the Bruton's IDA Petites hosted the WLCA team and were defeated by a score of 6-4. Whitby was quick to open the scoring and soon had a couple of goals past Nicole Beare before the girls seemed to get in the game. It wasn't until the second period that Nicole Slack from Lisa Levy and Tracy Pelow finally found the mark. A couple of minutes later, Denna Lovering from Misty Andrews and Parliament tied si core but it wasn't long before Whitby's big gun had scored twice more. In the third period Lisa Levy from Heather Lawrence and then Misty from Nicole scored. Whitby also scored twice more. The girls had numerous chances but couldn't connect. Next game for these girls is on Friday, March 9 at 10:15 a.m. when we play in the B Regionals at Sunder- land. Tweens win On March 3rd and 4th the Chris Allen Alum- inum Tweens played back to back against Woodville. The first game started off slow for us but the team got it together later in the second period and came up winners with a score of 7-5. Scoring for us were Jenny Blanchard 4, Kelly Calloway 2, Jackie Durham 1 and Michelle Beare 1. Assists went to Connie Norton 3, Michelle 2, Vicki Schryburt 1 and Brenda Poirier 1. In the second game we had a tie of 6-6. Each team checked closely not letting either one keep the ring for long. Jackie Durham had 2 goals along with Michelle Beare. Kelly Calloway and Jenny Blanchard each had a single. Jackie had 2 assists with one going to Connie Norton and Michelle. All the girls played well. Keep up the good work.
