Opening their own travel something Brent and Karen Taylor had hoped would eventually hap- pen, a wishful-thinking sort of dream the young couple thought might come true somewhere in the future with a lot of hard work and good luck. But last Monday, when the doors to Port Perry Travel were officially opened, the dream became reality. "Owning an agency was like a dream for when you're 40 or 50," says Karen, sitting com- fortably beside her hus- band in their newly fur- nished office on Water Street. The agency was found- ed with the financial aid of a silent partner and the enthusiasm of the Taylors, who met while taking a travel counsell- ing course at Sir Sand- ford Fleming College. The course was three years long, after which Brent gained experience in the business working for CP Air and tour com- panies in Toronto.. Meanwhile, Karen was paying her dues working for a company named Holiday House, learning the many ins and outs of the travel business. Although Karen's per- sonal travelling has been limited to Canada and Nassau, Brent has been all over the place, from Honolulu to Switzerland and just about -everywhere else in bet- ween. His interest in travel was sparked while he was still in high school, when he par- ticipated in the Canada World Youth Program. The program took him to South America and he had a terrific time ---- despite the fact that he was there during the Jonestown tragedy. As travel agents they will no doubt enjoy many other trips to countries around the world on familiarization tours sponsored by wholesalers trying to hard sell their particular resort, hotel or vacation retreat. Many of the trips can be dull, Brent points out, spent on a busy riding from one hotel to the next, until they all start to look the same. But it's up to the agent to pick on the good hotels, to watch out for the bad ones and to soak in the ambience of a country so he or she can relate the experience to a potential customer. And for the customer, a travel agent's services are free. It's the airline or the resort that pays an agent's wages via commission. Brent and Karen say business has been good in their first week, better than they expected. Their first booking was for a trip from Toronto to Dusseldorf and judging by the number of in- quiries the agency has already received, more bookings will soon be in the offing. "It went well, better than we expected. We thought we'd be sitting here dead," Karen says, "but it wasn't. All kinds of people have been in to visit." Although the Taylors are presently living in Oshawa, they've been searching for housing in - Port Perry since December, when renova- tions to the agency first began. Originally, Karen hails from Belleville and Brent from Alliston, which is how they ended up settling in Port Perry. Every weekend, while travelling back and forth from Alliston to Sir Sand- ford Fleming in Peter- borough, Brent would drive through Port Perry ---- liking what he saw along the way. When it came time to find a loca- tion for the agency, it wasn't hard to choose 'this town. The Taylors realize they're up for some tough competition from Nonquon Travel, a com- pany that has served Port Perry well for many years, but they don't want to steal any of Non- quon's business. '""We think there's more than enough business for both of us," Karen says with a grin. "And besides,"' Brent; adds, "any business has a tough time of it for the first few years." Port Perry Travel is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Gods of Metal film to be shown Arms build-up results "A stimulating and provocative film which challenges all of us to find ways to save the human race." This describes the film 'Gods of Metal' to be shown in Port Perry, Tuesday, February 21. The film about the nuclear arms race illustrates the results of arms build-up and analyzes it from a moral and religious perspective. Following the film, John Wilkinson, from the National Office of Opera- tion Dismantle will ad- dress the meeting. The meeting will set in mo- tion the process for laun- ching a new branch of Operation Dismantle in Durham and surroun- ding areas. Operation Dismantle's primary goal is a world referendum on disarma- ment. After seven years of effort, they achieved their goal when Costa Rican Ambassador Mario Pacheco announc- ed that his government would propose the world referendum. The vote which will call for the goal of balanced, general disarmament would give a voice to people who feel powerless as individuals to influence the course of events. In Canada, Operation Dismantle has been in- volved in many suec- cessful referendums, court victories, and 139 MP's from all parties support the idea for a world referendum. The national office of Operation Dismantle is very happy about the possibility of a new branch. Our new President, Ken Brown, opened the event and welcomed members and guests. He urged those in attendance to take advantage of our rather extensive library, to apprise themselves of the gardening tips con- tained therein and get ready for spring plant- ing. Ken then proceeded to dispel those after- holiday blues by re- introducing "Fun with Flora', a horticultural quiz designed to test our knowledge.
