Call the Star for Information: PHONE 985-7383 Robert Stuart Bruce Heaslip A highly respected and well known citizen of Cartwright Township- Robert Stuart Bruce \ Heaslip passed away at 'the Community Nursing Home, Port Perry, on Wednesday January 11, 1984 after a lengthy ill- ness. he was in his 89th year. Son of Mr. and Mrs. David Heaslip of View- lake farm situated on the Cartwright-Manvers boundary, Bruce was born November 28, 1895, and received his education at Cedardale Public School, SS No.9. At 14 years of age he left school to assist his father on the farm. On July 2, 1924, he married the former Olive Lillian Irvine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Irvine of R.R.No. 1 Janetville. After marriage, Bruce and Olive farmed for a period of 27 years until the sale of the property in 1951, then taking up residence in Nestleton where he had an attract- ive home built on the site of the former Jim Bruce store which had been burned. Very inventive and clever, Bruce made the awn- ings for their new home- as well as inventing the electric door lift. They were very happy in their new abode-mingling with friends and neigh- bours in and around Nestleton. Many a plea- sant evening was enjoy- ed over a game of bridge with these folks. Bruce was a self educated man and gave exemplary service to his community serving in many fields. He was a member of the Nestle- ton United Church and served on the board of Ste'vards in 1968. For a number of years he served in Municipal Council and was also Reeve of Cartwright Township for two terms - 1950-1951. As well-he was Chairman of the Port Perry Hospital Board - and served two terms as President of Cartwright Agricultural Society. Talented in creating with his hands-when a youngster he made a threshing machine and operated it attached to his mother's sewing farming years he made a shot-gun-also a separator in which to thresh the crop of beans. A very successful and meticulous farmer! His ready smile- cheerful ways- and sense of duty won for him a "'host" of friends. A lifetime of productive, memorable hours- a tribute to his talents - we shall all miss Bruce very much indeed! In the late fifties Bruce developed Osteo Arthristis and had very poor health from then on until his death. In Oct- ober 1978, he took a massive stroke - later on - he was taken to River- dale Hospital, Toronto for therapy. A marvell- ous place and they were able to teach him to walk - but he couldn't talk. In 1979 he broke his hip and spent a couple of months in Oshawa and Port Perry Hospitals - finally entering the Community Nursing Home in Port Perry, January 18, 1979. He had been a bed patient for many months - when he passed away peacefully. He leaves to mourn his loving wife - Olive Irvine Heaslip, Port 'attendance at PORT PERRY STAR --Tues. January 31, 1984 -- 31 A tribute to Robert S. Heaslip McDermott-Panabaker Funeral Chapel, Port Perry, with interment in Riverside Cemetery, Lindsay. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Glenn Jackson, Port Perry who spoke words of comfort to the bereaved. The large the service and the beauti- ful floral tributes and many donations (to the hospital fund testified to the esteem in which the Perry, nephew Elwood" deceased was held. Pall- Averill of New York State and was pre- deceased by a sister, Viola Averill. The funeral was held January 14, from the bearers were: Messrs. David Frew, Oram Moore, Earl Bowers, Bruce Lawson, Arnold Williams and Oliver Rohrer. Auxiliary plans for Spring Fair by Luella Graham The January meeting of the Community Hospital Auxiliary was held on Jan. 16 at the hospital with 20 ladies present. Our president opened the meeting with all repeating the Auxiliary prayer in unision, and then wished all a very Happy New Year. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Pat Taylor gave the treas- urers report and Cam- ille Crosier reported on the Tuck Shop work. Thelma McCreight reported on the work of the Adult Volunteers and told us the volun- teers had put in 3668 hours in the last year. Congratulations girls in: giving of your time in the past year. Mr. Brown was with us, and told us the hospital expansion is coming along well, with. a possibility that we may be having our next meeting in a new room. It is the time of year when we begin to think about our Spring Fair, letters will be going out regarding this in the near future. Also some Euchres were discussed and there will be a euchre at the Latcham Centre on February 29th at 1:30 p.m. At this time the meet- ing adjourned, and lunch was served by Marg and Luella. Grace UCW by Barbara Brown Our January meeting was held at the home of our president Yvonne Appleton. Yvonne open- ed the meeting with a reading "Don't quit" and then Hymn 600 "Wise Men Seeking Jesus" was sung, followed by The Lord's Prayer repeated in unison. The Roll Call was answered by twelve members and one visitor with each one confessing their New Year's resolu- tions if any. The minutes of the last meeting were . - read by Christina Pren- machine. During the - tice, also the annual report and were approved. The treasurer's report was given by Joan Aldred and it was agreed we had a very successful year in 1983. Camille Crozier gave a good report from the Hospital Auxiliary. We were reminded to save used stamps, eye- glasses, Ca npbell soup labels and Red & White or [.G.A. grocery tapes. Correspondence was read by Barbara Brown. The Devotional part of the meeting was taken from Luke 6: 46-49 and James I: 22-25. Two readings were given "Be Doers of Word and Not Hearers Only" and "Turn A New Page." The business part of the meeting consisted of discussing coming events such as- Bake Sales and Euchres, Jan. 31, Feb. 14, and Mar. 13th. All beginning at 8 p.m. Bring all your friends and neighbours. Our annual Beef Sup- per will be March 28th with three settings -- 5, 6, and 7 p.m. at the Island Hall. Tickets are $6.50 adults and $3.00 children and are available from Mrs. Doug Crozier and Mrs. Robt. Taylor. Easter Breakfast is be- ing planned at the Island Church. We will be cater- ing to the Island Cub and Scout banquet, May 1st and the Island Guides and Brownie banquet May 26th. There will be an official Board meeting with Rev. Tansley, Jan. 30th at 8 p.m. Madaline Cawker gave a very interesting reading about Christmas Customs in different countries. We closed our meeting with Hymn 23 'When All Thy Mercies,"' followed by repeating the Mizpah Benediction. A social hour by Yvonne's group was en- joyed. The February meeting to be held at Pat Taylors. Visitors and new members are always welcome.
