Sports -- 18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. Janvary 24, 1984 by John B. McClelland The Port Perry Mo- Jacks found the scoring touch Sunday night at the Scugog Arena as they thumped the Cob- ourg Cougars 10-3 to snap a winless streak that has dragged on for four weeks. The badly needed Nothing fancy about 10-3 win over Cobourg victory was the first for the team since Dec- ember 18, and just the "second win in the last 13 games. And in the battle for the important fourth place in league stand- ings, the MoJacks now trail Little Britain Mer- chants by a single point. Each team has three games to play before playoffs get underway. There was nothing very fancy about the way the MoJacks de- feated the Cougars Sun- day evening in front of a sparse crowd at the Scugog Arena. They were simply three goals and Todd Wilb better than the visitors in all departments: passing, skating, shoot- ing and goaltending. The MoJacks clicked four times on the power play, and the penalty killing units were superb as they chipped in for two shorthanded goals. Forward Brian Nich- olson led the MoJack scoring attack with a hat trick and an assist. Bob Horton re-discover- ed his scoring touch with a pair of beautiful goals and a couple of assists. And captain Todd Wilbur also had a four-point night on the ur notched a pair. With the day night at the Scugog Arena as Port Perry whipped team battling for fourth place and playoffs just around urg Cougars 10-3. Horton had a pair of markers, in- the corner, the solid victory over Coburg will boost con- cluding this one as he made some nifty moves to come fidence and may help the MoJacks get back on the win- from the corner and Sat. Jan. 21, Port Perry Sportsland Jrs. travelled to Ops Arena to play Lindsay Juniors. In the first period Lind- say scored two quick goals and then Heidi Meisner lifted a corner shot unassisted. Tina Soomre set up the next goal as she passed the ring to Karyn Raines who in turn passed to Natalie Franssen and Nat was able to slide it right by Lindsay goalie. Lindsay retaliated with two more goals In the second period Natalie passed the ring to Karyn and on to Heidi who scored another for Port. Lindsay put in another two good goals. slide the puck by Rob Turland in the Cougar net. Dave Nicholson led the Mo Jacks with Juniors watch lead slip away Denise Tompkins made a lovely pass to Vicki Reid who .n turn passed to Heidi to mark up her hat trick for the game. Lisa St. John gained possession of the ring and made a nice pass to Colleen Scala who tuck- ed in one more for Sport- sland. We then lost our steam and Lindsay slipped in another four neat goals. The game ended 9-5 for Lindsay. Heather Muir made numerous good saves in net for us. On Sun. Jan. 22 Port Perry Sportsland Juniors played an exhibition game against Port Perry Kinette CORL Tweens. Heidi Meisner opened the scoring for Sportsland assisted by Karyn Raines. Heidi put in a second goal unassisted. The third goal went to Heather Muir assisted by Tina Soomre. The Kinette Tweens let loose with their first goal by Sheri Harris assisted by Colleen York and a second g al by Melissa Moel.: ng assisted by Jessica Fluke. Colleen passed the ring to Sherri for their third goal. Sherri put in their fourth which was set up by Kim Caudle. The play went to the other end of the rink ning track. (See story) when Heidi set up the ring for Tina to slide Sportsland fourth goal of the game through. Heidi made another pass to Dawn Park who whipped in Sportsland fifth. This neck and neck game was taken back to the other end by Sherri who set up Melissa for another Kinette goal. Back to the opposite end was Dawn with the ring setting up Tina for another Sportsland point. Tina passed it over to Heather who neatly chalked up one more. Vicki took off with the ring and passed to Heidi who scored Sportsland"s eighth goal. Colleen shot the ring from Terri Childs to Jennifer Pelow and marked one more for Kinettes. Jen then set up Kim Loudfoot who put in their seventh goal of the game. Jen still on the fly passed to Kim to chuck in another. Kim Loud- foot gained possession once more and made a good pass to Jen who put in the final goal of the game, thus making the score 9-8 for Kinette Tweens. a Terri Childs played a good ganje in goal for the Kinettés as did Natalie Franssen who tackled her [first game in net. # / / / score sheet as he clicked for two goals and two assists. Single goals came from defenseman Rob Nicholson, and for- wards Wayne Snodden and Brian Mikkelsen. MoJacks took control of the game right from the opening faceoff as they led 3-1 after 20 min- utes and out-shot the visitors 17-7 in the first period. The Cougars made it 3-2 at 5:42 of the second when Bill Jex hit from in close, but the MoJacks slipped into high gear with four un-answered goals to take a 7-2 lead into the dressing room after 40 minutes of play. Probably the most important goal for the team came at 10:45 of the second period as the MoJacks were killing a penalty and Scott Wallace stole the puck at centre ice. He fed a pass to Brian Nicholson who broke in alone and snapped a wrist shot to the top corner. That made it 5-2 and the Mo- Jacks never looked back. In recent weeks dur- ing the long winless streak, the MoJacks have had all kinds of trouble with good scor- ing chances that just missed the net, rattled off goal-posts or were buried in goaltender's pads. But that changed against the Cougars and a good example was a goal in the second period from Bob Norton who ripped a slap shot from the right side that caught the post but bounced into the net. MoJacks also got a short-handed goal from Wayne Snodden whose hard work paid off when he stole the puck and snapped home a wrist shot midway through the third period. For the visitors, Jim. Goody had a pair of goals while Bill Jex notched a single. In the MoJacks net, Ken Harman didn't have a busy night facing just 23 shots, but he was very sharp on several occasions when the "game was close and twice he stoned Cougar shooters on clear cut breakaways. The MoJacks have added Steve Nicholson to the line-up as Brad __Flaxman and Paul Butterworth have both decided to play juvenile : hockey for the rest of the year in Cannington. And John Fusco looks like he is returning to form after missing several games. He MolJacks get a victory, at last! worked hard all evening. He is a definite spark-plug for when he's playing well, the team seems to go better. The MoJacks still have a shot at over- taking Little Britain for fourth spot in the stand- ings. Port Perry hosts the league leading Bow- manville Eagles tonight (Tuesday, Jan. 24) at 8:30 at the Scugog Arena and will finish regular season play this weekend with a game Saturday night in Stouff- ville and then back home on Sunday night against the Uxbridge Bruins. The Merchants also have three games left against Uxbridge, Cobourg and Lakefield. The team that finishes in fourth place will meet the eighth place finisher in the' opening playoff round, while the fifth place team will meet the first place squad. The MoJacks have had a roller-coaster of a season, starting off quickly with a string of wins that put them in first place after 15 games. But then they went into a tail-spin for several weeks and slipped back to fifth spot. Whether Sunday's solid performance against the Cougars is an indication the team is breaking out of the slump remains to be seen. But with playoffs just around the corner, there is no better time to re-gain that early season momentum. In other league action this past weekend, Little Britain and Lakefield skated to a 4-4 tie, and the Lindsay Muskies humiliated the Stouff- ville Clippers 23-1. Midgets tie 4-4 On Tuesday January 17 Port Perry Canadian Tire Midgets travelled to Canr ton and came home with a 4 to 4 tie. This was by far Port's best effort of the year as they skated hard, pass- ed well and received some good goaltending from John Moore. Scoring for Port were Mike Fluke assisted by Ray Woodcroft and Chris Saulnier, Willy Edwards unassisted, Clay Dempsey unassist- ed and rounding out the scoring was Tim Maw from Willy Edwards.
