The guest speaker at the last meeting of the Scugog Social Planning Council were Mr. Ron Kitchen from the Board of Directors of Partici- pation House Project (Durham Region) Inc., and Ms. Rhea Reed, Program Supervisor. They have been approached by the Social Planning Council because of our growing concern about the lack of services for physic- ally handicapped men and women who live in Scugog Township. . They began by explaining that Partici- Pation House is not, in fact, a house but a number of apartments and townhouses in Oshawa with 24 hour staff support for those residents who need it. Parapelegics and quad- rapelegics are living in these settings success- fully. By making use of Handi Transit, they are free to use many community resources as they are able and interested. The apartments and houses have design features that assist in the independence of handicapped people. The Scugog Arena may be alive with the sound of hockey games these days, but on the night of July 14, the place will be rocking to the music of The Hawk. Ronnie Hawkins, a king of rock and roll, and one of the genuine super-stars of the Canadian music scene for nearly 25 years, will hit the Scugog Arena for a two hour concert and show as part of the annual Western Week- end festivities in this town. Rompin' Ronnie is billed as the '"'last of the original rock and rollers," and at 49, he is just about the closet thing to a living legend in Canadian music. His appearance at the Scugog Arena July 14 will be the highlight of the re-vamped Western Weekend sponsored by the Scugog Chamber of Commerce. One of the main changes to Western Weekend is the date. This year it will be held July 12-14, rather than the second week in August which has been the traditional date for the last decade or so.
