Communi- ty Memorial Hospital, Port Perry, supports the efforts of the Canadian Council on Smoking and Health and other related agencies in raising awareness of the dangers of smoking. This is also an oppor- tune time to remind the public of the Hospital's policy on smoking, and to thank all those in the community who have readily supported that policy. The Hospital as a health-care facility endeavours to provide services to meet the needs of the community -it serves. Smoking is a recognized health hazard, both for those who smoke, and for those who must share the same air as the smoker. Naturally, the treatment of a patient takes priori- ty over someone's wish to smoke. While trying not to en- courage smoking. the PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. January 17, 1984 -- 27 Board of Governors realizes that there are some patients who find it distressing to refrain from smoking during their time in Hospital. Therefore, patients who, have their nhvsician's permission to smoke may do so; however, this is not encouraged. Hospital Visitors are ask- ed to Refrain from Smok- ing Anywhere in the Hospital. . We feel that visitors are in the building for relatively short periods of time, and it is not unreasonable to ask that they wait until they leave before they smoke. Those hospital staff members who smoke may' do so only in designated smoking areas. It should be pointed out that the ma- jority of hospital staff are non-smokers, many are ex-smokers. To en- courage more of its staff to "butt out' the Hospital has provided copies of the "Time To Quit" package (available from Health and Welfare Canada, in conjunction with the Canadian Cancer Society). We're One Year Young A year has quickly past since we opened our doors to serve you. We appreciate the faith our many clients and friends have shown in us. It has been a year of great satisfaction.
