January 10, 1984 ports C and B wins 1-0 in tourney final There was lots of action over the weekend as the league hosted its annual tournament at the Manvers arena on Saturday, followed by regular play on Sunday. The tour. was a success for the league as three of the top four teams came from Port Perry as C&B beat Bea- cock's 1-0 in the 'A' division final, and Odd- fellows lost 2-0 to Power Sports from Trenton in the 'B' final. All six teams from the local loop participated against teams from Trenton, Oshawa, Toronto, and Barrie "areas. Dave Burnett started the scoring off in Atom On Sunday afternoon Jan. 8 the Malmont Atoms played the Ux- bridge Atom Bruins in Uxbridge and came away with a hard fought 4 to 2 victory. Uxbridge opened the scoring but Mark Andrews tied it up late in 'the first after taking nice passes from Greg Fitzgerald and Steve Staniland. A determined Uxbridge team went ahead 2 to 1 in the second but Jan Heyes doing a super job killing a penalty stole the puck just outside the Uxbridge blueline and walked in and scored to tie the game at two. Then Jan scored again in the third period when he was parked in the slot Edgar, Ncrma Cornish, Port Bantam the first period with assists going to Rob Baker and Scott Feasby. Then two minutes later, Dave Culbert scored from Dave Burnett and Rob Baker. Greg Stapleton start- ed the second period off right with an unassisted and fed a nice pass from Dan Sluggett to put Port out in front for the first time in the game. Dan Sluggett rounded out the scoring on a nice low corner shot from 15 feet out to ice the victory. Full marks go out to Carey Labuik and Shawn Larocque for a good job done between the pipes. 7-5 Loss On Sat. Jan. 7 the Malmont Atoms got in a shoot out at the Oshawa Civic against the L.N.L.L, Canadians and dropped a 7 to § decision. Port dominat- ed the play in the early going and if they could have finished off the plays around the net Ladies Bonspiel winners Judy Mitchell and Ruth Powell emerged as the winners and were presented with the Stedmans trophy by Miles Knutson and Bob Barr. A's just keep rollin goal. Then Port scored two goals in a span of 46 seconds. The first going to Brad Menzies assist- ed by Bob Goble and Dave Culbert. The second going to Steve Durham assisted by Dave Culbert. Port got their next goal two minutes into the third period by Dave Burnett they would have put the game out of reach in no time but Oshawa scored on their first opportun- ity to take the 1 to 0 lead. Jason Cochrane scored to tie it up from winger Jeff Parry and Jason's brother Gavin and the period ended that way. Some pretty shabby play in the second was costly as Oshawa scored five times although Port got two of its own. Jody Logan got one from Mark Andrews and Mike feasby and Brad Moase scored fronf Jason Cochrane. Mark Andrews scored in the third from Jan Heyes and Mike Feasby then Jan got a nice goal of his own with assists going with assists going to Chris Skura. The next goal went to Brad Menzies with Dave Cublert and Scott Feasby picking up the assists. Then halfway through the third period Greg Stapleton scored from Rob Baker and Scott Stars win two, lose to Mike Feasby and Dan Sluggett. Port didn't lose this one they gave it away. 4-2 Victory On Friday, Jan. 6 the Port Perry Malmont Farms Atoms hosted the Port Hope Atoms and notched up a 4-2 victory. Port Perry got behind the eight ball early and fell behind 2 to 0 well into the second period. Mark Andrews won a draw in the Port Hope end and Gavin Cochrane slipped the puck in front of the end to Greg Fitzgerald who' was left unattended and fired a high shot over the sprawling Port Hope goalie and Port was back in the game. At the the tour. losing 1-0 to Alliston Drifters follow- ed by Utica downing Pap's Pizza by 3-0. lan Down collected the hat trick with assists going to Keith Ellicott and Ken Fraser. Beacock's first game had them beat Brighton 3-0 with goals by Dave Dalton (2) and Steve Hawes, - Ron Wagg, Ron Short and Gord Bryans assist- ed. Emmerson's were the next host team to play and they went down to K. Winter by a 2-0 score. Brian's Tow- ing also lost their first game by 3-0 to Carlo's of Oshawa. C&B beat Casey's 2-0 to finish the first round on goals by Ed Olsen and Tim Ash- bridge with assists going to Danny Taylor and Randy Sullivan. In the second round Oddfellows knocked off Papa's Pizza 4-0 on goals by Kevin Martens with 2, Brian Pomeroy, and Danny McKee. Martens, Wayne Lown and Ken Bryant added assists. Utica then snuck past Alliston by a 1-0 tally on a goal by Ian Down unassisted. Emmerson's sent Feasby. With two minutes left Steve Dur- ham gave Port their 9th goal with the assists going to Greg Stapleton and Brad Menzies. Sixty seconds later Rob Baker scored from Dave Burnett and Dave Cul- bert. Steve Whalen play- ed well in net as he had very few shots on net. 6:47 mark of the third period Mark Andrews scored to bring Port Perry even at 2 to 2 with the visitors with assists credited to Greg Fitz- gerald and Gavin Cochrane. Mike Feasby put Port ahead for good when he wristled a shot from the point past the Port Hope's goalies ear with Jan Heyes and Scott Menzies getting assists after some good fore checking by both boys. Dan Sluggett then sealed the victory with a breakaway goal to end the scoring. These two teams are one and one in exhibition play this year and if the rubber match is in Port you wouldn't want to miss it. Brighton home on a 3-0 score: with Phil Robin- son, Bruce Foote and Tim Dennis scoring. Wayne Slute picked up the only assist awarded. Beacock's took a 3-0 lead before beating K. Winer 3-2 on goals by Wayne McGuigan, Cordell Keaning and Ron Wagg. Assists went to Keaning, Gary Toutant, and Dalton. Brian's were sent pack- ing when they lost 1-0 to Casey's. C&B got on by downing Carlo's 3-0 with goals from Taylor, Doug Scott and Bruce Wood- row. Mark Lee got the lone assist. In the semi- final Oddfellows and Emmersons met with Danny McKee notching the lone goal to send Oddfellows to the 'B' final. Blackstock and Utica met in the semi-final with Black- stock winning 2-0 on goals by Steve Hawes and Keaning with Tom Wotten and Dalton pick- ing up the assists. C&B met Georgetown in the other 'A' semi-final, winning 2-1 on goals by Lee from Bart Wagar and Wagar from Mike Healey. 'A' As was earlier stated Oddfellows lost the 'B' final 2-0 to Trenton to cap a very successful tournament for them. Rob Evans from Danny Taylor scored the lone marker in the 'A' final to give C&B the 1-0 win over Beacocks. Port Perry also wrapped up the indivi- dual awards as Odd- fellows Casey Van Schagen got best goal- tender Ken Bryant received the best defenceman and Brian Pomeroy was chosen MVP. On the 'A' side Bea- cock's Rick McLean, Cordell Keuning and Dave Dalton received the top honours. Regular Season Play Sunday's regular play saw three white washes as Utica pounded Bea- cock's 7-0 to make up for Saturday's loss. C&B downed Oddfellows 5-0 to make the battle for first place tight between them and Utica. Brian's dashed Emmerson's hopes for the Regionals by defeating them 3-0. - Standings to date - C&B - 25; Utica - 25; Beacock's - 18; Emmer- sons - 10; Brians. - 8; Oddfellows - 2. g right along In the second game, Port came up against Pickering with the same 10-0 result. With 25 seconds into the first period, Dave Culbert started Port off with Brad Menzies and Scott Feasby capturing the assists. Greg Stapleton got the secohd goal and Dave Burnett got the assist. Dave Culbert scored the last goal of the first period from Brad Menzies and Steve Durham. The only goal of the second period went to Rob Baker with Dave Burnett picking up the assist. Brad Menzies started the third period off from Scott Feasby and Greg Stapleton. Then Rob Baker came up with an unassisted goal. Dave Culbert picked up his hat-trick from Steve Durham and Rob Baker. With 3:18 left in the game, Rob Baker captured his hat-trick, assists went to Dave Burnett and Greg Stap- leton. Then just 30 seconds later Greg Stapleton got one from Dave Burnett. And just 50 seconds later Dave Culbert got his fourth goal of the game from Brad Menzies and Bobby Goble. Kevin Cearns got his shut-out for the day as Port allowed a minimum amount of shots. Now Port moves on to the championship game against Lindsay. Port got the only goal of the first period when Dave Culbert scored from Steve Durham and Brad Menzies. Lindsay start- ed the second period off but Port came right back with a goal from Dave Burnett and Rob Baker and Greg Staple- ton picked up the assist. At the end of the second period the game was tied. Then in the third period Port exploded with four goals. The first going to Rob Baker with Dave Culbert and Steve Durham getting the assists. Then Rob Baker got his second from Dave Burnett and Scott Feasby. And Dave Culbert found the net with Steve Durham and Scott Feasby picking up the assists. Rob Baker captured the hat-trick with Greg Stapleton and Dave Burnett each gett- ing their second assist of the game.
