December 13, 1983 -- 29 a Messiah charms United Church by Linda Relf On Wed. evening, Nov. 30, Port Perry United Church resound- ed to the glorious sounds of Handel's Messiah, presented,by Town Hall 1873 and performed by the Kingsway College Symphonic Choir and the Oshawa Symphony Orchestra. Sometime during the summer of 1741 Charles Jennens, a wealthy eccetric with a mod- icum of literary ability, presented Handel with a Libretto for an oratorio consisting of verses drawn from the Holy Scriptures and entitled "Messiah". Handel immediately set to work on its composition com:- pleting it in twenty-four days, surely one of the greatest feats in the whole history of musical creation. Wednesday night's performance was con- ducted by Winston Webber, with Keich Rasmussen at the organ. The orchestra instruments were bal- anced and there was good rappart between orchestra, choir and soloists. The only minor fault was that occasion- ally the orchestra over powered the soloists, in particular the lower range bass and con- tralto. The highlights of the orchestration were the pastoral symphony and the trumpet solo throughout the Bass Air "The Trumpet Shall Sound'. The trumpet, played by Susan Barber, was clear, true. sound, pure and chaste, a beautiful tribute to an excellent musician. The four soloists, Margaret Morris, Con- tralto, Martha Collins, soprano, James Ander- son, Baritone and James McLean, Tenor, were more than profess- ionally capable of per- forming the Messiah. The choir was strong, weil blended, perform- ing as one. All choral sections were superb especially Lift Up Your SMART SANTAS The Gift that keeps on giving ... _ EVERY WEEK THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE YEAR! Heads, O Ye Gates, Hallelujah Chorus, and the beautiful resonance of the bass section in Unto Us a Child is Born. The choral parts that contained numerous runs, a challenge for any performer, were performed with excellence. The entire perform- ance by orchestra, chair and soloists was a delight to listen to and be part of and thorough- ly enjoyable for all who attended.
