Mayor J. Taylor welcomed all present on behalf of the Township. After the singing of O Canada, Area Councillor John Wolters brought greet- ings from Senior Levels of Government. Ward Councillor Harvey Graham read the scripture after which Rev. Ansley Tucker gave an impressive message on "Passing the Torch". Following the singing of the hymn "For the Healing of the Nations", the Port Perry Legion lead the procession to the Ceno- taph Park where the laying of wreaths and two minutes of silence were observed. Sympathy is extended to Miss Ida Dempsey and Mrs. L. McArthur on the passing of their brother recently in Stratford. Mrs. Mec- Arthur along with her family Mrs. Norman Dysart, Miss Betty Mc- Arthur and Mr. Ardis McArthur attended the funeral service in Strat- ford. Sorry that in last week's news I made an error in that Kelly Beatty and Ken Sweet- man's wedding reception and dance should have read was held at Nestleton Hall rather than at Black- stock Hall as was reported. Many local residents are involved with Royal Week in Toronto either as exhibitors or visitors. It will be a busy week in a lot of households. The Scugog Choral Society is presenting its: fine production Fiddler on the Roof this past weekend and on Wed., Fri. and. Sat. of this week. Those from this area who are taking part are Muriel Barry, Barry Van Camp, Glenn Larmer, Shirley Jack- son -and Charles O'Connor. Rhoda and Russell Larmer had an enjoy- able day when their family and friends gathered to help them celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary. Family members who were present for this happy event were Don and Doris Larmer, Donna and friend of Peterborough, Norman and Joyce Gibson of Bowmanville, Audrey and Glen Gibson of Oshawa, Lawrence Larmer, Brian and Michael of Barrie, Ray and Daine Larmer, Danille, Jason and Rebecca of Pickering. During the day they received a phone call from their daughter, Bernice Pascoe of Cal- gary and their grand- daughter Patricia Murdock of Grand Bend. Congratulations from the community to this fine couple on their anniversary. Mrs. Alba Currie, Beaverton, Mrs. Vera Warmington and her daughter Jill and Jerry Suffolk, Campbell River, Vancouver Island, B.C. were Sat- urday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Thompson. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Mahaffy spent the week- end in St. Marys where they visited Bill's brother, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Mahaffy. Bob's Purple Hill friends will be happy to know that he is now at home recuperating from his serious heart attack. The annual Cart- wright High School Commencement on Sat- urday evening attracted a very large crowd of parents, and friends. A warm welcome was extended by Student Council President Norma Jean Newbold followed by remarks by the Principal Gordon Paisley and Message from the Durham Board of Education by Trustee Rev. Stuart McEntyre. Following the present- ation of diplomas and the many prizes, Elizabeth Kelly intro- duced her elassmate Howard Bailey who delivered an excellent Valedictory Address. The Choir directed by Mr. R. Ashton and accompanied by Mrs. M. VanCamp favoured us with two numbers Almost Like Being in Love and One. A one act play The Other Other Woman delighted the audience. On Sunday the annual Graduation dinner was held in the St. John's Parish Hall. The nine graduates, Howard on Remembrance Day Bailey, David DeVries, Brian Gardner, Marilyn Green, Deidre West- man, Sandra Johnston (absent), Elizabeth Kelly, Lynn McDiarmid and John Priebe, their parents, the staff of C.H.S. and the Student's Council all enjoyed a delicious dinner catered by the A.C.W. After dinner the graduates were "'roasted" by staff members who rem- insced about acitivities during their years at C.H.S. Much visiting was enjoyed by these young people who are all at post graduate studies. School children joined with municipal officials and members of the Legion in a memorial and wreath-laying service to honour the Canadian war dead. -- Obituary -- Dennis Raymond Gatchell Dennis Raymond Gat- chell was born July 29, 1963 at Oshawa General Hospital. He lived on Rit- son Road North in Oshawa for his first eleven years. He attend- ed Queen Elizabeth Public School from Kindergarten to Grade 4. He attended Kedron and St. Stevens Sunday School. Dennis played hockey for the North Oshawa Park Association. In 1974 Dennis moved to Blackstock with his parents, sister and two brothers. He attended Cartwright Public School and Port Perry High School. He played hockey for Port Perry Minor Hockey Association. When Dennis was twelve, he started work- ing after school and on Saturdays for Malmont Farms. Soon after he decided to quit high school to work at his chosen profession, farm- ing. He was predeceased by his grandfather, David Gatchell. Dennis lived a short twenty years, but left a wide circle of friends, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and his parents Bob and Dianne; his sister Jackie; and two brothers Terry and David to mourn his sud- den, untimely passing. Dennis was seriously injured in a truck acci- dent on the Shirley Road, southwest of Blackstock on October 30, 1983. He passed away in Sunnybrook Medical Centre on November 2, 1983. Funeral Services were held November 4, 1983 at 2:00 o'clock from Wagg Funeral Home. Reverend Dale Davis conducted the comfor- ting service. Interment was in Hampton Cemetery. Tea was served in the Blackstock Recreation Centre by the Blackstock United Church Women. The pallbearers were David Gatchell; Roger Gould; Raymond Cochrane Jr.; Jamie Malcolm; Mark Graham and Kevin Horner. Honourary Pallbearer was Jamie Cory. Li
