November 1, 1983 Pity poor Tevye (Ron King, with his hands over his ears) who can't stand the nagging of his wife Golde (Jean Kennedy, top). But all's well for Lazar and butcher (Charlie Hastings, center) who has just been matched up with a pretty young thing, thanks to mat- chmaker Yente (Susan Reed). It all sounds like a soap opera but it's really part of Fiddler On The Roof, coming soon to Town Hall 1873. See story for details. CRITE g : 'EH vot Nar ATH i) SA HGR PRD Yi § Fiddler promises to be " another society success Scugog Choral Society heralds its annual musical production for 1983 'Fiddler on the Roof" presented through special arrangements with Music Theatre Inter- national. The book was written by Joseph Stein, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and music by Jerry Bock. Rehearsals are in full swing with enthusiastic participants under the direction of versatile and talented Grace Hastings and accom- plished accompanist, Gloria Forder. The orchestra has been trained and directed by maestro, Bob Cawker. ~~ Joan Godley assists as drama coach. This is the eighth production of the Choral Society since its form- ation and promises to live up to the reputation it has established over the years. Fiddler on the Roof, a popular and well-loved musical, is well cast with familiar char- acters in different roles, and new stars contribut- ing greatly to the show. Each individual will stir your emotions with humour, pathos, and musical ability. The setting is Ana- tevka, a village in Russia, populated by Jews of the old '"Tradition". Teuye, a sentimental, naive, humorous and lovable character, is portrayed by Ron King, who loves and lives his part. Golde his wife, played by Jean Kennedy, is delightful. Their five lovely daughters, Tzeitel play- ed by Bobbie Drew, Hodel by Rosanne Car- negie, Chava by Nancy Lewis, Shprintze by Marion Rodway, Bielke by Muriel Berry, support and interpret their characters ably. The family's lives change drastically when the daughters fall in love, opposing Tradition. Russian soldiers inflict a pro- gram on the villagers and finally uproot them, forcing them to leave their homeland; a very moving experience. A strong supportive cast gives colour to this production. Charlie Hastings plays his part with conviction as Lazar, the butcher, who desires the eldest daughter but loses her to a younger man she loves. Our crafty match- maker, Yente, Susan Reed, establishes her role with credulity. Susan also serves as choreographer. Bill Slute as Motel, the tailor, Charles O'Connor as Perchik, Barry Van Camp as Fyedka, and Don Taylor as Mendel add much to the pro- duction. Ken Farndale andVilma Giannini pro- vide humour in' their distinctive roles. Doug Farndale, our set designer, has con- tributed his talents with authenticity. Producer 'Zula Hall and many unnamed people behind the scenes are working hard towards the success of the show. The director and cast welcome you to our performances in the Town Hall beginning November 11. Singers say bye to director Russ The County Town Singers regretfully say good-bye to Russell Baird, their Director for the past three years. The Choir was ex- tremely fortunate in hav- ing Russ at the helm -- he is a very talented musician who came to us in the spring of 1980 just weeks before our annual May Show. Ror ag Ng GE TTT RT YP UE a Eo LE SAR EE El St Tl Lh Et att SL right into double rehear- sals, a sea of new faces and personalities, Russ's calm and dedication set the choir on its feet to produce an excellent spring concert. For the past two and half years, Russ took the singers through many different types of music, some of which included classical numbers at Christmas time. Jazz and big band music fill- ed the halls the following May, and there were challenging as well as delightful selections of folk songs. At Russ's prompting the Choir went in search - of a rehearsal piano of their own. The Sklar, Pepplar, Heintzman Co., very generously donated a beautiful Georgian "upright which the choir proudly uses for practice as well as local concerts. Under Russ's patient and diligent instruction, the choir developed their dic- tion, phrasing, breathing and other vocal "necessities for a great sound. Russ had been 'the "music teacher at Port Perry High School for a number of years, teaching award winning jazz choirs and. bands. He is now involved in .developing the same degree of excellence with' his students at O'Neill Collegiate in. Oshawa. Russ's musical career began at the age of _ twelve, conducting with the St. George The Mar- tyr's Boys Choir. At eigh- teen, he became organist and choir master at St. Clement in Toronto. He brought his talent to the County Town Singers, helping them maintain- their high standards and grow in new directions. Much of the material * sung by the choi was ar- ranged by Russ. Memorable renditions of music from the forties ° era delighted audiences ~ from Toronto to Mon- treal. A 15th Anniversary arrangement written by Russ to celebrate this special occasion displayed his creative County Town Singers have a difficult task now in finding someone to fill - Russ Baird's shoes.
