When Mr. Gray was presented with his five- 100 dollar bills (Grave Love holds them, above) he gave the club $100 back to put towards their fundraising campaign for a new clubhouse. Let Mikey try to exterminate bees First it was Mrs. Robinson's problem. The hornet nest was tucked underground ap- proximately one foot from her northern pro- perty line on Scugog Island. Even though it was technically on a right-of-way owned by the Township, it really was her problem. After all, the bee stings she received didn't exactly tickle. So she made it the Durham Region Health Unit's problem. Not one to mince words, the Health Unit immediately sent a letter to the Township re- questing '"'that the Township take steps to have the insects eliminated as soon as possible." Someone over in the municipal office sug- gested they file the letter for information and not do anything about the problem. Clerk- administrator, Earl Cud- die said nothing doing, however, and told coun- cil last Monday after- noon that something should be done about Mrs. Robinson's hornets. "We can't run away from this," he said. "Isn't that what most people do? Run away from a hornet-nest?" Councill John Wolters quipped. Then someone sug- gested that the councillor for that ward (Ward III) be responsible for removing the nest. Everyone giggled but nobody volunteered for - the job. So in a classic case of "let Mikey try it," coun- cil handed the dirty deed over to-the deputy roads superintendent. With glee. "Let me tell him," one councillor demanded. "No, I'll tell him," Earl Cuddie cut in. "With pleasure." And they all laughed. Another problem bit the dust. © ECONOMY COMPACT \ STANDARD A FULL SIZE - PONTIAC BUICK LIMITED 10VANEDWARD DRIVE. She believes that's the last time the sidewalk has had any work done on it and she wants the situa- tion changed. Mrs. Meijerink ap- peared before Scugog Council last Monday afternoon to complain about the sidewalks Rabid cat frightens (From page 1) veterinarian where it was promptly put down when it began to vicious- ly attack the cage it was in. An examination of the animal's head re- vealed positive rabies. The Read began their series of rabies shots (six shots spread over 28 days) Monday. Ann Barrett and another woman who had assist- ed her with the cat will also receive shots. The Reads' four cats will be quarantined for the next three months, even though they all had rabies shots. Anyone who has seen any animals displaying rabies symptoms is ask- ed to call Ms. Barrett at 852-7295. Stay clear of any suspected animals under all circumstances and tell your children to do the same. Although Ms. Barrett says she doesn't want to scare anybody, Mrs. Read does. She's seen an acquaintance die with rabies and she doesn't want the same thing to happen again. "I want people to be scared," she said. along the west end of Queen Street. She called them dangerous and cau- tioned council to do something to improve their condition before a child is hurt or killed. Councillors informed her that the Township had simply run out of money while doing sidewalks along Queen Street and couldn't af- ford to repair or replace «the sidewalks in Mrs. Meijerink's area this year. In the past few years, council had been spen- ding approximately $15,000 per year on sidewalks, a small sum compared to the cost of repairs. With the help of Tuesday & Thursday Evenings - 6:30 P.M & Saturdays. government grants, council was able to sink $75,000 into sidewalk con- struction but it still wasn't enough to replace every one in town. '$25,000 isn't going to solve the sidewalk pro- blem in this community" Clerk-administrator Earl Cuddie said. Council did promise to have the roads commit- tee look at the situation and if it warrants, the sidewalks could be repaired or replaced next summer. "We were just working until the money was us- ed up," Mayor Jerry Taylor said. "Next year, hopefully, we can con- tinue on." ---- - Denture Therapy Clinic 305 QUEEN STREET - PORT PERRY -- OPEN -- BY APPOINTMENT ONLY! PLEASE CALL: 985-2916 Helen M.
