Crossing guards fo ~ _ {Ah}, They won't be whistling dixie ... they'll be whistling to make going to school even safer. Port Perry's six crossing guards were outfitted with whistles last week in an attempt to force unwilling motorists to stop for school crossings. Irene Harrison does guard duty for Prince Albert Public School, where she says traffic isn't bad compared to areas in front of R.H. Cornish Public School and Immaculate Con- ception Catholic School. There will be a pro- gramme of music in the hall beginning at 7:00 p.m. including a barber- shop quartette and various local talents. This will be followed by strawberry shortcake and coffee. The Junior Choir enjoyed a baseball game and other entertainment last Wed- nesday afternoon in the park and after that were hosted by Bob and Linda Hunter to a Barbecue at their home. This con- cludes the choirs activ- ities until fall. Mrs. Ann Phoenix --- hosted -a-family shower ~~ at her home for Denise Dusty on Sunday after- noon. The Greenbank Teen Group will be holding a car wash this Saturday, 9 am. - 1 p.m. at the Greenbank Public School. Proceeds will go to help support this group. Mrs. Marjorie Beaton and Mrs. Marie Cook- manrecently attended a shower for Miss Mary Caye Fergusson at the home of Mrs. Bruce Beaton, Port Perry. At the suggestion of Durham Regional Police Constable John Bell, who is hoping the whistles will add extra incentive for drivers to stop, the whistles were ordered by the Town- ship of Scugog. They arrived last Wednesday morning. "We just don't want any accident like the one in Whitby where the woman, who was a guard for 16 years, was hit and killed," Mrs. Harrison says.
