Epsom and area news by Jean Jeffery . Congratulations to Laura and Maurice VanVeghel on the ar- rival of a son. Laura, Maurice and Bart visited Frank "and Donna Van Véghel this week. The VanVeghel family attended a bridal shower at the home of Donna's, mother, Mrs. Elsie Wood for Michael and his*bride-to-be Sue. A weeks rest for the choir - practice will resume next week. Gord and Jill Postma visited Sun- day afternoon with Frank and Donna VanVeghel. Lois and Barry Bushell and Linda had Sunday dinner with her parents Howard and Ruth Ashton. Doug and Beth' Wilson held a birth- day party on Thurs. evening for Betty's father, Ross Evans. All of Ross and Bar- bara's brothers and sisters "enjoyed the evening together. Earl and Marie Wilson entertained Dennis Irwin, Carol and boys, Ian and Marlene Archibald for Sunday dinner. Sunday guests with Ron and Lorraine Brown were daughter Melody and Bernice Aldred of Greenbank, Steve 'Kearly and Vera Prentice. Session meeting at Epsom Church, on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Steve Heathwood and family ly of Scarborough were supper guests on Friday with David and Joyce Collins. On Sunday, Joyce Collins' parents Crawford and Mary Young of East York visited with them. Last Wednesday, Linda Littler and children visited the Begin home. Jeffery and Mike went back to Toronto for a cou- ple of days and on Fri- day, Darlene and John went to the Lit- tler home to pick them up. Barbara and Ross Evans have returned from a holiday in Vancouver - while there they visited Mary Stevens, who used to live on the 9th Conc. of Reach. After the big Holstein show in Vancouver, they spent some time in Utah attended a Hols- tein Heifer Sale near Salt Lake City. Also visited that city - the home of the Latter Day. Saints. Epsom- Utica Social Club met a the home of Elizabeth and Earl Taylor Saturday night and all went to Richter's Greenhouses. Our marvellous hostess and tour guide made it a truly educational pleasure for which we thank her "and will long remain a plea- sant memory. Most Improved Herds by John Finlay Agricultural Representative The annual meeting of the Durham Dairy Herd Improvement Associa- tion was held at the Orono United Church on March 23, 1983. Guest speakers were Lloyd and Mary Kellogg from Welcome, who showed slides and described their trip to Newfoundland. Mr. Bruce Hendry, ODHIC delegate from Durham East reported on the activities of the Corporation, including growth of 18 per cent in numbers of cattle recorded during the last 18 months. Awards were announc- ed for owner sampler producers by Hilda Ball- ing, Supervisor in the north part of the county. The herd showing the most improvement dur- ing the year was Dwayne Boughen's with an' in- crease in Composite BCA of +12. He received a trophy from .Modern Agro Systems, Peter- borough. The highest producing herd on the Owner Sampler Pro- gram was John Band- stra, R.R."2, Newcastle, who received the Durham Farmers Co-op Trophy. The award for Best Calving interval 'and the Plaunt's Farm Service Trophy was won by Danny Prosek, R.R. 1, Orono. In the supervised pro- gram category, Don Knight, Supervisor from Oshawa, announced the results. The Most Im- proved Herd Award and the Shur-Gain Trophy went to Kenneth and Marjgrie Knox, R.R. 2, Blackstock with an in- crease of 33 BCA points. The top herd in the area with a BCA of 152.5 and - winner of the Ceresdale Fertilizer Trophy was William and John DeVries, R.R. 4, Bowmanville. The Best Calving Interval and the Toronto-Dominion Bank Award was won by Ernest Webster and rewarded at meeting Brian Stripp with a calv- | ing interval of 12.0 months. The "Royal Bank Trophy for the Best Plus Production Cow was awarded to Ernest Webster and Brian Stripp on Granbee Baroness with a Com- posite BCA of +69.5 on the herd average. In the election of of- ficers, Wes Oke, R.R. 4, Oshawa was named Chairman, John DeVries, R.R. 4, Bowmanville, Vice Chairman and Bruce Hendry, R.R. 1, Port Hope, Secretary- Treasurer.
