[TC Son he ER cP ph) letters Disappointed with Star column Dear Sir: Your Chatterbox column in last week's paper in which you quoted a poem which "offers those of us who are not seniors yet an idea of what we're gett- ing into as the years roll by" was very dis- appointing to me, to say the very least. It painted as the norm, every possible ailment that might happen to us as if this is what each of us should expect as we get older. We owe it to our community to be as pos- itive as possible about any members of society that are being singled out. Since we have come such a long way in changing attitudes to- wards handicapped people, I was shocked to see such stereotyping aimed at senior citizens. If we look at any of the men and women we have admired as we grew up, we might as time has gone by, seen some of the individual descriptions from the poem OR we may have seen none until Mr. or Mrs. so and so passed away from a ? , while mowing the lawn, vacationing in the sunny south or whatever. We are usually surprised when we hear they were 77, 80 or 85. They may have needed occasional help along the way from family, friends or Now accepted at ... St IS HERE NOW! What we can't seem to remember is that most people live out their years as active members of the comm- unity. They are not the person in the poem and they are not those living in Homes for the Aged and Nursing Homes who are only 6 percent of our elderly citizens. For those who are not facing the coming years in a positive way, the poem only serves to make things worse. However, there isn't one situation mentioned in the poem that cannot be helped in some way. Nutrition counselling, exercise, preventative health care, recreation, retirement planning and assistance for physical handicaps are available to EVERY age group in the Township of Scugog today. This is not 1939 or any other "'eve"', this is 1983 and there is nothing in history to compare with this era. We have to have peace - there is no alternative. You may be pleasantly sur- prised to find that what you considered to be "old Age" - isn't. Yours truly Elizabeth Fulford co-ordinator, Scugog Community Care NOTE: Mrs. Fulford, I appreciate your concern for our elderly and am very much aware of how hard you work for these people. The comments you are concerned with were written by an elderly couple and my reason for publishing them was merely to give both seniors and younger people a humorous look at old age. I would have to agree that if I was afflicted with all of the ailments _ described, there would be nothing funny about it at all, but I am sure anyone can relate to many of the symptoms of old age even when they are young. Even at my tender age I have the stiff body, poor eye- sight and hair falling out. I am sorry the poem disappointed you, but I can assure you I do think positively of the contributions of the eld- erly in our community, and the poem was not meant to poke fun at anything but life in general.
