The councillors visited Fairview Lodge in Whitby to see if washrooms being built in a new wing of the old age home were adequate. About $51,000 in changes to the washrooms were being considered, but the council- lors vetoed that plan after watching a demonstration of how a bed-care resident being helped by two attend- ants could manage in the new facilities. Instead of approving expensive changes to the lay- out of the washrooms, the councillors decided the facil- ities could be improved by reducing the size of the vanities, a move that saves $500 instead of costing $51,113. "I feel pretty good about that," said regional chair- man Gary Herrema. The added work to the washrooms would have put the $2.8 million renovation project over budget. The pro- ject now is already expected to be $194,819 over budget in some areas, but surpluses in other budget categories are expected to offset the region's portion of the extra costs. The renovations at Fair- view will add more than 20 new beds to the old age home, and will increase the 'number of washrooms there.
