After building the new school, Mr. John Dresson was contracted to dig a well and stone it at $1.25 per foot. A pump was purchased but the well never proved to be any use and the boys attending school took turns carrying water from the Harris farm across the road. In 1875 the teacher a Mr. Pringle was asked to resign. Mr. Geo. Stone made on agreement to teach on the condition that if he proved ac- ceptable, he would be paid $425 per year, it not he would accept $400. He received on- ly $400 after a special meeting was held and the vote was unanimous as dissatisfied with the teaching. - In 1878 Miss Louise Marsh taught 80 pupils, a school pic- nic was held and a flag pur- chased for $1.76. In 1879, 14 cords of beech and maple wood were bought for $1.00 per cord. The first iron desks were placed in the school in 1894 at a cost of $75.80. Slate blackboards were installed in 1900 costing $15.95. In 1911 the attendance drop- ped to two pupils. After much debate, it was decided to close HOME COMFORT For All Of Your PETROLEUM REQUIREMENTS and 24 Hour Complete Heating Service in Port Perry EMERGENCY SERVICE Day or Night - Phone 985-2572 Furnaces - Air Conditioners - Boilers - Air Cleaners - Humidifiers - the school. $60 per annum was paid both Prospect and Shirley schools for tuition of pupils attending each. Ralph now resides in Port Perry and has many an interesting story of Cedar Creek past. The saga of Cedar Creek School will continue next week.
