Due to excellent team work and super goaltending the Green Machines won the Champ- ionship of the "A' division and then went on to win the Grand Championship for their division. The first game was agaiast the Oshawa Red Wings with Oshawa scoring the only goal in the first period. The Green Machines came out flying in the second period and after only a minute of play tied the score. This important goal was scored by Jarret Har- men with Mike Feasby earn- ing the assist. Three minutes later goal number two was scored by Eric Grosvenor assisted by Jan Heyes and Danny Sluggett. On a fan- tastic passing play from Jeff Mills goal number 3 was scored by Jarret Harmen at the 3:23 mark. Excellent goaltending by Ryan La- Rocca kept Oshawa off the scoreboard during the 2nd period. Thirty-seven seconds into the third period, Jeff Mills scored Port's fourth goal with the assist going to Mike Feasby. Seconds later Oshawa scored their second goal of the game. Final score of the first game was 4-2 for the Green Machines. Three Star Selection was made at the end of the game with trophies presented to the three boys. Congrat- ulations to Eric Grosvenor for being selected first star and to Jeff Mills who was selected 3rd star of the game. The second game of the tournament was played Sat- urday afternoon against an Atom team from Peter- borough. The Malmont Farm Atoms won by a score of 7-1. Clair Cornish started the scoring in the first period on a goal assisted by defense- men Sean Bradbury. Peter- borough was not long in tie- ing up the game only to have Jeff Mills whip one in the net. Jeff's goal was unassisted and gave Port a 2-1 lead. Clair Cornish soon found his spot making it a 3-1 hockey game with his unassisted goal. With six minutes left to play in the first period Eric Grosvenor scored goal number four. Peterborough tried many times but was unable to get the puck past Ryan LaRocca. The second period remain- ed scoreless until the 4:09 mark when a super passing play from Mike Feasby and Jeff Mills resulted in a goal by Jarret Harmen. This made it a 5-1 hockey game for Port at tie end of the second period. Both teams continued to play well during the second period with the Green Machines scoring two more goals and Peterborough having their chances stopped by a strong defense and great goaltending. Goal number six was un- assisted and short-handed and goal number seven was assisted by Jeff Mills. Clair earned himself a hat trick in this game as a result of his hard work. After winning both their games, the Green Machines were now ready to play for the championship on Sun- day. This game was against an Atom team from Leaside who was also very deter- mined to become the Champion Team in the Tournament. The first period was very exciting but due to excellent goaltending on both teams the period ended scoreless. Leaside scored first in the second period at the 6:50 mark giving them a 1-0 lead. The Green Machines did not give up for a minute as each boy played excellent. With only 15 seconds left to play Port got on the scoreboard to tie the game. This goal was a result of a super passing play from Jeff Mills to Jarret Harmon who put it in the net. Eric Grosvenor was quick to break the tie i the third period on a nigty goal assist- ed by Jeff Mills. The Grand champion game was played against the consolation winners - Oshawa Red Wings with the Malmont Farms winning by a score of 4-2. Both teams played well during the first period but it wasn't till the 2:17 mark before the 1st goal was scored. Clair Cornish scored for Port with Mark Andrews earning the assist. With only 9 seconds left in the period, Oshawa tied the game. Twenty-four seconds into the second period Oshawa took over the lead. A super passing play by Jeff Mills resulted in a goal by Jarret Harmen and tied up the score. An unassisted goal by Clair Cornish gave the Green Machines a 3-2 lead. Eric Grosvenor scored Port's 4th goal late in the second period with Clair Cornish earning the assist. The third period remained scoreless with both teams playing an excellent game of hockey. The final score of the game was 4-2 and the Mal- mont Farm Atoms were the Grand Champions. The Green Machines were each presented with a trophy and should be very proud of the way they performed throughout the tournament. Port Perry High School Sports by Kathleen Taylor The junior girls' volleyball team won their seasons opener against Bowmanville on Wednesday, January 5 in an at-home game. They achieved this defeat by winning three games straight. Our three boys basketball teams also played on Wednesday with all three teams defeating Uxbridge in a triple header. The senior boys came from a six point deficit to win one of their most crucial games so far this season. Pete Christie and Scott Wallace were high scorers with 13 points each. The junior boys also won an exciting match defeating Uxbridge 43-41. Top scorers were Rob Burnett, Darryl Musselman, and Dean Stone. Craig Menzies scored 33 points to lead the boys' midget basketball team to an entertaining 65-64 win over Uxbridge. Shawn Arney emerged as top scorer with 8 points and Fred -Cockerton and Chris Lane each had 7. All three teams played again on Friday, January 7 at Ajax. The seniors came from 20 points behind in the third quarter to lose by a fees. The midgets were led by Craig Menzies once again to defeat a strong Ajax team. Craig emerged high scorer with 21 points. This win extends their league record to 5 and 1.
