- LI ES YET al Te . x L) 4 a BR ARON (30 CT 1 RAD ELET RE HT Ashburn and area news by Mrs. E. Heron The Designer showcase put on by the Burns Church Kirk guild on Tuesday evening, November 16th at the Thunderbird Golf and Country Club was a huge success. The dining hall was filled to capacity and was taste- fully decorated with lighted tree effects around the stage and was softly filled with music from the organ. Margaret Mathews, pres- ident, welcomed everyone and introduced Barbara Porter who did a good job of commentating for the evening. Many beautiful outfits of dresses, jackets, sweaters, bags and jewellery looked lovely on the thirty four models who took part. One of the highlights was the wedding gown parade, some dating back to the 1800's, right up to the present time. Two very interesting moments were when the old witch dropped in to do the lucky number door prizes and when the huge paper mache horse came trotting in with Ray Porter as rider, dressed in an appropriate costume. ! Coffee and cake was served at the close of the evening and a friendship time was spent looking at the displays of knitting, make up lovely sewn garmets etc. It was a lot of work and much thanks is due to every- one who helped make it a lovely evening. There was a large turn out at the euchre party on Thurs- day evening of last week. The ladies prizes were won by Caroline Hicks and Bobbie James. The mens prizes went to Charlie Rut- ledge and Lorne Parrott. Jack Bright won the door prize and Bill Hodgens won the 50-50 draw. After lunch was enjoyed Arthur Richardson made a presentation of a gift of money from the community to a newly married couple John and Jody Rutledge. John grew up in the village before moving to Nestleton a few years ago. They will make their home in Port Perry and we wish the happy couple many years of happy married life together. Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Ash- ton attended the 60th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Wallace of Stouffville last Sunday after- noon. On Wednesday evening November 24th, tonight, the Brooklin Horticulture Society will hold the annual pot luck dinner in Brooklin United Church Hall. After dinner there will be recog- nition of the prize winning members for the year and an entertainment. This is always an enjoyable evening so bring dinner food and come and enjoy the fellow- ship. Last Sunday at Burns Church was Communion Service, Rev. McEntyres sermon was taken from the gospel of St. Luke and the message was "The Gospel according to Mary" and the. choir sang '""To God be the Glory." Next Sunday - Rev. McEntyre will begin an advent series on "Advent Voices", which will last until Christmas.
