November 23, 1982 ports ~ MolJacks scramble for two ties i ETAT rie, WX SA] The Port Perry MoJacks pushed their unbeaten streak to four straight games as they scrambled for two ties in Junior C hockey action last week. After blowing a 7-4 third period lead November 16 in Lakefield against the Chiefs, MoJacks had to pull their goalie in the dying seconds to get the equalizer and eke out an 8-8 draw. On Sunday night at the Scugog Arena against the vastly improving Bewdley Rangers, Port Perry fell behind 3-0 in the first perid. Playing catch-up hockey for the rest of the evening, Mo- Jacks finally took a 7-6 lead midway through the third only to have Rangers yank their goalie and tie the game 7-7 with 48 seconds remain- ing. So far this season, Mo- Jacks have not lost a game at the Scugog Arena as their home ice record stands at four wins and three ties. The Rangers are a hot team with back to back victories over Bowmanville and Little Britain, and they came out flying in the game Sunday night against the MoJacks. } They built a 3-0 lead by the 15 minute mark of the first before Scott Wallace found the range with a high shot from close quarters. But Bewdley upped the lead to 4-1 less than a minute later stuffing the puck behind Clay Lovering in the MoJack net. As the Bewdley Ranger netminder goes for a sprawl several Port Perry MoJacks try to close in for a | action Sunday night. Down 3-0 at one point, MoJacks fought back to take a 7-6 lead midway through the third, oose puck during Junior C only to have Rangers tie The second period was just 18 seconds old when Jamie Bird teamed with linemates Wallace and Bob Horton to cut the lead to 4-2 on a power play, and at 7:41 John Fusco took what looked like a harmless shot on the Ranger net from well outside the blue line. It seemed to handcuff Jim Welch in the Ranger goal and slipped between his glove and the post. Darrin Jobb of the Mo- Jacks was off for tripping when Gord Edwards got his second of the night to make the score 5-3, but a minute later Tim Thompson closed the gap with a shot that just trickled over the line after hitting the goalie's pads. MoJacks had a fairly wide margin of play in the miaaie frame outshooting the Rangers 13-7. Early in the third period, Rangers took advantage of some sloppy play in the MoJack zone to boost the score to 6-4, but at 5:46 Todd Wilbur took passes from line- mates Thompson and Brian Mikkelsen to make it 6-5. The Wallace-Bird-Horton line went to work for the tying goal at 7:16 with Bird making a nice shift just inside the blue line and beat- ing the goalie with a clean wrist shot to the low corner. That was the nicest looking goal of the evening. MoJacks finally got the lead at 8:43 as Thompson and defenseman Derek Edwards sent Brian Mikkel- sen in on goal. He made a fancy deke in front of the net before sticking a back-hand home." Clay Lovering did some fine work in the MoJack goal when his team was short- handed and Wallace put on a one man show in a penalty killing role. But a hooking penalty to Darrin Jobb at 17:16 left MoJacks a man short and Rangers yanked their own netminder for an extra attacker when Ken Donald- son got the tying marker at 19:12. He stepped from behind the MoJack net and fired a shot along the ice. It was the second Ranger goal of the night scored from that position. the games with under a minute to play. MoJacks have not suffered a defeat on home ice so far this season and this coming Sunday night, they face the tough league leading Lindsay Muskies in what should be a good game. - Pacers starting to hit their stride by Hillis Wilbur After a slow start to the season with only 1 win and a tie in league games, the Grant Menzies Pacers put it all together when they travelled to Haliburton on Saturday to win the Champ- ionship. In the first game they played Madoc and won 6 to 3. Scoring for Port was Steven Lee with 3 goals for a Hat Trick, getting singles were Craig Menzies, Brian Horton and Dave Kemp. Picking up assists were Vaughn McKee with 2, Fred Cockerton with 2, Lee Wilbur and Craig Menzies with 1 Pee Wee B's nipped 3-2 On Thursday evening, November 18th, the George Stone Pee Wee B team travelled to Little Britain for their 4th league game of the season. This was the first meeting for the teams and we saw some excellent hockey and an exciting game. In the first period, Little Britain took the lead six minutes into play, this was short lived as Jim Vernon tied the score a minute later with assists going to Jeff Oke and Davis Watts. The score remained the same until the second period when Little Britain took the lead again. Port came back with lots of pressure and a super goal by Derek Fitz- gerald who put the puck just under the cross-bar assisted by Jim Vernon tied the game again. - The third period saw both teams putting on the power and there was one minute left to play when Little Britain scored an won the game 3-2. Port defense once again did a good job, goalie Brent McMillen made some excellent saves. A good team effort and a well played game Port! apiece. The most valuable player for the game went to Vaughn McKee. In the second game the Pacers played Powassan and won 4 to 2 putting them in Championship game. Scoring for Port was Brian Stevenson with assists going to Steven Lee, Dave Kemp assisted by Lee Wilbur and Greg Warriner, Steven Lee scored unassisted on a beau- tiful solo effort. Vaughn Me- Kee rounded out the scoring assisted by Greg Warriner and Lee Wilbur, Steven Lee was chosen most valuable player. In the Championship game they played Ennismore and won 5 to 2. Doing the scoring for Port was Greg Warriner assisted by Lee Wilbur and Dave Kemp. Jamie Lee assisted by Vaughn McKee, Ray Meisner assisted by Dave Kemp, Vaughn McKee assisted by Jeff Johnstone and Craig Menzies, Steven Lee assisted by Brian Stevenson. Most valuable player was goaltender Paul Kingston who had one of his best games yet. Paul Goreski also played well during the day. Coach Doug Scott and assistant coach, Todd Wilbur and manager Hillis Wilbur think this win should give the boys a lot of confidence and be a team to reckon with the rest of the year. Their next home game is against our arch rival Ux- bridge, November 29th at 8:00 p.m. Their next tourna- ment is in Bancroft the 4th and 5th of December. Lovering blocked 36 shots while the Ranger goalies faced 39. : The game was an excellent one to watch as both teams stuck pretty much to hockey. There were some very hard hits on both sides but they stayed away from the dirty stick work. Rangers took six minors and MoJacks were called seven times. Three of the Rangers goals came on the power play while MoJacks could manage one when they had a man advantage. The MoJack record now stands at seven wins, five ties and four losses. good for 19 points. The team is battling with Lakefield for fourth spot, but still close to the league leading Lindsay, Bowmanville and Little Britain. MoJacks are idle until this Sunday night when they meet the Lindsay Muskies at the Scugog Arena. Faceoff is 7:30 and the game should be a dandy as Muskies hold top spot in the standings and there is a traditional rivalry between the two clubs which has resulted in some fine hockey in the past. In the only meeting so far this season, the game ended in a 5-5 tie. Girls reach semi finals by Kathleen Taylor Well, the junior girl's basketball team have been successful once again with two big wins over O'Neil on G.L. Roberts. They played at O'Neil on Monday, Nov- ember 15th beating them 52-23. With this win against O'Neil they went on to the LOSSA Quarter finals at G. L. Roberts, beating G.L. with a final score of 25-24 on Friday, November 19. The midgets and seniors also played at O'Neil on Monday. The senior girls defeated O'Neil with a final score of 53-34. It was a super ending to a respectible season. Top scorers were Kira Kope and Kelly Kasper. . Unfortunately the midgets were not so 'lucky, losing against the first place O'Neil team 14-11. This lose com- pleted their season as they didn't make the quarter finals because of it. * The junior girls play in the semi-finals on Friday, Nov- ember 26 at Centra Coll- egiate at 5:30. If they qualify for the finals, they play at Central again on' Saturday, November 27 at 5:30. Good Luck to Rob Burnett and his girls.
