These facts prompted a year long survey which identified the need for emer- gency housing. The women's Hostel Committe, under the umbrella of the Social Planning Council of Oshawa- Whitby, (SPCO-W) has now set out to fulfill the need for a specialized facility for the region. The committee has named the proposed hostel "Auberge" (haven) and is seeking a downtown Oshawa location close to crucial facilities such as Manpower, the Alexandra Clinic, Legal Aid, Family Court and public transit. This month, a brochure and letters were sent to all clubs and organizations in the region, outlining the plans for "Auberge" which 'will offer both long and short term accommodation to abused women and their children, including guidance and referral service. It asked for the financial support and donations of furniture of those organiza- tions. "The signs are very pos- itive," says George Van Dyk President of the Oshawa and District Real Estate Board. "A sales volume increase of 4 million dollars in one month indictes a significant increase in market activity." Local, Provincial and National factors all com- bined to make this Sept- ember the best since 1978. Federal and Provincial pro- grams to stimulate the housing industry are having a real effect.
