The announce- ment was made by Agriculture and Food Minister Dennis Timbrell who said the extension from August 1 will ease the tran- sition in the marketplace. Although licence applications have been flow- ing in, obtaining the necessary information to establish each dealer's financial responsibility is taking more time than. anticipated, "said, beef producers should originally 'Timbrell said. "This has meant that we will not be able to issue enough licences by August 1 to maintain an orderly, com- petitive. market for prod- ucers," he said. Moving the program start- ing date to September '1 should ensure that every applicant who meets the licensing requirements will have a licence by, that time, Timbrell said. © Timbrell stressed, how- ever, that there would be no se further postponement. He irgee these (si enling to seek a to do so immed- iately. Those required to be licensed as dealers include commission firms, community sale operators, meat packers, slaughter- house operators and country dealers. i Timbrell said that every effort. is being made to advise all segments of the beef cattle marketplace of the change in date to avoid any possibility of confusion next week. As of September 1, dealers without licences will be ~ operating in contravention of the law. At that time, Timbrell ensure that dealers they sell cattle to are licensed. 'Otherwise, sales will not be covered by the. program's compensation fund in the event of payment default, i he said.
