Regular followers of this popular pull are urged to note the change of time -- Friday's events begin at 6:30 p.m. sharp and Saturday's event begins at 5:00 p.m. sharp. Blackstock was the first Tractor Pull in Central Ontario and many people feel it is one of the very best organized still to be found. The Blackstock Agricultural Society is very fortunate in having a crew of fine directors who try their best to keep events running smoothly and efficiently all the time with a maximum of Treat fireworks with respect says expert So, you or your group want to stage a fireworks display. That's nice. Fireworks are enjoyed by just about every- one, especially when the occasion is something like July 1. But the first thing you have to do is hire a Fireworks Supervisor, someone who has obtained a certificate to AERC 25 Ny Sa PARC A, & EOE A SRR wo. at ; Here's Why It Pays to Deal at ... In fact, you can't even buy firecrackers unless you are a certified Supervisor. That's where Don Osmond of Mississauga comes in. He was the gentleman hired last week by the Scugog Chamber of Commerce to set off the fireworks for the Canada Day celebration on the Port Perry waterfront. Don received his Fire- works Supervisor's Certifi- cate several years ago by completing a short course given by the federal depart- ment of Mines and Resources. "It wasn't much of a course, really, just four. hours long and not even a written examination' he told the Star last Thursday evening while preparing for the fireworks in Birdseye Park. He has staged a half-dozen shows in the past six weeks, but says he is only busy twice a year; on May 24 and July 1. Staging a fireworks display like the one seen in Port Perry July 1is not justa case of buying the fire- crackers and lighting the fuses. Far from it. There is a lot of preparation involved. Don first had to inspect the firing area to make sure it was satisfactory. He had to buy the firecrackers in Milton where they are distributed for the Quebec company that makes them, Hand Chemicals Ltd. And for three hours prior "to the show, Don and his .assistant Pete Holman were busy digging some eighty holes in the ground for the mortars. The mortars are metal cylinders of varying sizes and each firecracker is placed in the mortar for lighting. They range in size, from 76 mm to155 mm (for the really big "pop"). The mortars have to be aimed properly to ensure that debris from the ex- ploding firecrackers does not come down on buildings or spectators, Don treats firecrackers with a very healthy degree of respect. He says the larger ones could blow a hole "three feet in the ground," and can maim or kill if not handled properly. In four years, he has never had a mishap. "But I'm over-cautious with them," he says. It was for these reasons that regulations were brought in several years to control just who can pur- chase and handle fire- crackers. Don charges $300 for his work, but says by the time he pays his travelling expenses (he made a trip to Port Perry a week earlier to look over the sight) and pays his assistant, there really is not too much profit left for himself. - But he seems to enjoy this sideline and says the extra money goes into his hobby model railroading, which can be expensive these days. Don says he decided to get his certificate several years ago when he was a member of a Kinsmen Club, so when the Club put on a fireworks, it would not have to pay somebody to set them off. - When the big moment finally arrives and the: night sky is filled with light and sound, Don says he is too busy lighting fuses to really enjoy the fireworks display. It is strictly work and business for him. We also Rent ADDING MACHINES - TYPEWRITER - RENTALS - delays. M.C. for the pull on both nights is Blackstock's own Harvey Graham who cannot be topped for his enthusiasm for Tractor Pulls and for those wonderful Green Machines.. His constant informative and entertaining commentary keeps the crowds cheering. On Friday evening the events will be Stock and Modified X4's, Vintage Tractor, Powder Puff, Stock from Tractors, 7000 1b. and modified Tractors. Saturday evening will see the modified 4x4's, modified tractors, stock farm tractors 9,000 1b. and up, the massive four-wheel drive tractors and the spectacular highway tractors. This last class is really very special when the many big rigs with their colourful lights will be dis- playing their power. Entries have been coming into secretary Joyce Kelly at afinerate. If you wishtobe a contestant get in touch with her as soon as possible to get your entry in. Plan now to attend the Blackstock Tractor Pull this weekend. Comco sold (From page 1) had been a number of tenders received for the purchase of the assets, and 'serious discussions' have been underway with the Simpson subsidiary since June 1 when the tender call closed. The Comco plant has been a significant industrial employer in the Port Perry area since it opened here several years ago. About three years ago, the plant was expanded, and it manu- factures numerous different parts and products for the auto industry.
