Cartwright Minor Softball New season gets underway by Mike Dearborn The Cartwright Minor Softball league got under way for the 1982 season last Monday when four Junior teams hit the diamonds. In the Junior league, which is comprised of 7,8, and nine year old girls and boys, there are five teams: Thompson's Village Market, Lishmans, David's Hairstyling, Country Upholstery Blues and Caesarea Fish and Chips. The opening game between Thompson's and Lishmans saw Lishmans come out on top by the score of 9 to 4 despite some fine pitching by Joel Schryburt of Thompson's. Lishmans broke away in the first inning, scoring 7 runs and the match was close after that. David Andrews and Stephen Staniland teamed up to pitch the victory. The other game had ' David's against Country Upholstery Blues. This was a close match as David's won-11 to 10. Glenn White and Chris MacLeod hit home runs for David's and Glenn White also handled the pitching duties with relief work from Richie Stapleton. For the Blues, Stuart Dyer hit a home and also pitched with relief from Darrell Dutkewich. Tuesday night brought the Intermediate aged boys and girls out to the diamonds. In this league there are also five teams: H.W. Mason Haulage, Turner's Green Giants, Marj Tripp Real Estate Limited, Port Perry Funland, and Don Frew and Sons. The first match up had H.W. Mason team members against Turner's Green Giants. Thanks to homers from Kevin Gibson, Michael Stanley, and Greg Stapleton, H.W. Mason went on to win 21 to 8. The entire Mason team played well together and some fine catches were made by Jeff Beddome, Michael Stanley, and Greg Stapleton. For the Green Giants, homers were hit by Chris Pollock. and Andy Dickinson and Chris Pollock also caught a hard line drive. The other game pitted Marj Tripp against Port Perry Funland and the Tripp team came out on top by the score of 16 to 5. Homers for Tripp were hit by Adam Derrick, Mike and David. Last names were not available but they will know who they are. Last but not least the Senior schedule commenced Wednesday evening. In the opener Haines Esso victorious over the Port Perry Kinsmen by the score of 19 to 8. there were no home runs scored by Haines, how- ever, Steve Medd, Bill Ross, and Tony Haines each had a triple with Annette Haines adding a double. The last game of the open- ing week featured Lorne Lee Construction up against the Blackstock Lions and the Lorne Lee team came away with the victory scoring 19 runs compared to 5 for the Lions. Chris Millson had the only homer for Lorne Lee and fine catches by Brett Garland and Rick Hunting- ton sealed the victory. In wrapping up, our season lasts until the middle of August and over 170 boys and girls will be playing ball Monday, Tuesdays and Wed- nesdays throughout the summer at diamonds in Blackstock, Nestleton and Caesarea. Games start at 6:30 and end at 8:00 and we would like to see you there to cheer on the players.
