The reason for the one hour of rollerskating instruc- tion was simple. 'Ladies were tired of skating around in circles," said Diane Aston, teacher of the class, "and they wanted to learn the basics." Basics include forward tangos, skating backwards, the- congo trio and glide waltzes. Mrs. Aston told the Star that the rollerskating builds up muscles and can burn up to 600 calories after several hours. The sessions which are held Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 will end around September. Due 'to the increase in- popularity and consequently the size of the classes, Mrs. Aston now has an assistant Lois Barnard who instructs beginners. Both men and women can take part in the instruction period on a voloftary basis. Only admission*and rental fees are paid. Children are also allowed although there is no formal supervision. The program is well received. One regular is Robin Mountenay of Oshawa who said that is is '"A lot of fun and nicer now that we are being taught." In the future are plans for a dance class in which both men and women can take part; but Mrs. Aston said the lack of male participation may be a barrier. - "Some men attend, but I think they're scared," she laughed.
