PEILP PONTIAC BUICK LIMITED 10 VANEDWARD DRIVE, PORT PERRY - 985-8474 "Serving the Community since 1976." On Saturday afternoon a very pretty wedding was solemnized in the United Church when Grace Gibson and Christopher Johnston were united in marriage. The reception and wedding dance was held in the Recreation Centre. Miss Lynda Parsons, Colborne, was a Friday night overnight and Saturday guest of Esther Kelly. Many from this area attended the fortieth wedding anniversary of Sandy and Irene Moore held at their home in Prince Albert on Sunday afternoon and evening. Early Sunday morning Mr. and Mrs. Don Green and family and Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Kelly and family took Marilyn Green and Eliz- abeth Kelly to the Toronto International Airport when the girls left for their summer 'employment at Lake Louise Inn at Lake Louise, Alberta. Best wishes girls, for a great summer. Guests with their mother during the week were Anson and Irene Taylor, Scar- borough, Kathleen and Albert Watts of Val Gagne of Northern Ontario. Later in the week, Bertha and Harry McLaughlin and Mrs. Taylor motored home with Kathleen. While there they visited Mrs. Taylor's grand- daughter, Katheryn and John Devins and baby Melanie at Iroquois Falls where Katheryn teaches in the High School. They also drove to Timmins where they enjoyed dinner and generally got to know the area. Mr. and Mrs. McLaughlin and Mrs. Taylor left Wednesday evening from Mathison returning home on the overnight train Durham police get bullet- proof vests Durham Regional Police have been issued with the latest in protective equip- ment - "soft body armor" vests, worn under an officer's uniform. The lightweight, flexible vests, which were unveiled at a Durham police commission meeting Thurs- day are capable of stopping a high velocity bullet fired at an officer or a knife attack, said Supt. David Edwards. 'The body armor consist of two parts - a padded vest for the chest and one for the back. The protection is pro- vided by numerous layers of a synethetic material woven from Kevlar- a new super fibre, made by DuPont - which is inserted into the pads, said 'Edwards. "The vest will hopefully .keep a bullet from entering the body", he explained, . "but the impact may still . break some bones, cause severe brusing or internal injuries. Some officers also believe the body armor can protect an officer from serious injury if he's involved in a car crash, he said. Chief Jon Jenkins said 360 vests were ordered for the _ officers who requested them. The department has left the option of when to wear the vests up to the individual men and women. Const. Rick Walsh who modeled his vest before commission members said the 4 and one half pound vest can be hot and uncomfort- able at times. (A vest for a larger officer about 6 feet, 4 inches in height might weigh as much as 20 pounds, he said). Durham Regional Police bought their vests through the provincial government which contracted to buy 14,000 vests for police depart- ments throughout Ontario. Chief Jenkins said the cost of the body armor - about $245 apiece - will be shared equally between: the province and the region. He said the department's share ($45,000) was put aside last year. The bulk purchase by the rovince, said the chief, nocked about $115 to $135 off the price of each vest. The provincial govern- ment's decision to order vests for the province's various forces was made after several officers were shot to death while on duty two years ago. Premier Bill Davis pledged, during the last provincial election, to share the costs of the vests. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday June 8, 1982 -- 9 Blackstock area news to Beaverton where they were met.
