| { | -- . two years, 20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed. May 26, 1982 Agricrew is a government program whose pur- pose is to provide young people with practical farm work experience. Last year a total of 53 crews made up the program. This year the program plans fo employ .67 crews across Ontario. Karen Risebrough, co-ordinator for the Agricrew program in York and Durham Region says the '82 program should be a success. So far, 21 days out of the total 40 day programs have been booked by farmers. Water levels likely ideal for Nonquon The dismal weather scene on the Victoria Day weekend was discouraging to gardeners, sportsmen and ~-*sun-seekers in general, but for canoeists there is one consolation --- there should be lots of water in the Nonquon for Canoe the Nonquon on June 5! This year water levels are the least of the worries of the Canoe the Nonquon committee. Costs of mailing have prevented the sending of race information by mail to all participants of the past as was done previously. This year only out-of-town mailings are being done -- hoping that local participants will pick up their information and entry forms at the Star Office. «> This year the regular custom of giving crests to all participants will continue-- but- new crests have to be purchased and the cost has doubled since the last purchase in 1975. And at that, this double price is only possible by buying in quantity -- a heavy outlay of money. In. addition, increased costs in all - aspects of the museum have made it a crucial one for the financial success of the race, A scheme has been worked out to reward conoeists for bringing in more money, the details of which appear in an -~ssd-elsewhere in this paper. Since Pioneer Days at the Museum did not have good weather this year, the Canoe the Nonquon committee has its fingers crossed that it will «ave better luck, and that Jots of canoes will take part, making the 14th Canoe the Nonquon a more successful sporting event, and at the same time a more successful fund-raising activity. NORTH CANOES COMING! If you are up early enough on Saturday, June 5, come to the lakefront at 9 a.m. to see the start of the North Canoe event in Canoe the Nonquon. The North Canoes are manned by five paddlers. They are much longer than the standard canoe with higher peaks at front and back. The canoes are fibre- glass nowadays, but they are all made to look like birch- bark. Crews sometimes dress in authentic Indian or Voyageur garb-- it isn't known at time of printing whether they will do that here. In two classes, one for men, the other for schoolboy teams from Lakefield College and possibly one other boys school, the North noes will start from Port Perry, go north around a boat anchored in the lake somewhere near the mouth of the Nonquon, and return. The first canoes should arrive back around 10:30 a.m. NEED PHOTO COPIES? We can do - them for you. PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street 985-7383 Agricrews can help farmers For those who require assistance on their farms this summer, a government program called "Agricrew' whose purpose is to provide farm work experience for young people, may be just the answer. Agricrew was launched five years ago as a takeoff to the Ontario Youth Employ- ment Program (OYEP). Its goal is to provide young people between the ages of 15 and 23 the chance to gain practical farm work experience. Crews will be placed throughout Ontario and consist of four members. Last year a total of 53 crews made up the program. This years Experience '82 program plans to employ 67, 4 person crews. Funding of Agricrew '82 is provided by the Ontario Youth Secretar- iat while administration is handled by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, "It's a learning exper- 2 To: PROPANE SAFETY, 555 Yonge Street, Toronto, Ontario ience,'"' says Karen Rise- brough, co-ordinator of the Agricrew - program for Durham and York Regions. She also told the Star in an interview that the program has expanded from three crews to four crews this year in this region. Miss Risebrough believes that this years program will be a success. So far, she said, 21 days out of the 40 day programs have been booked. "The - program doesn't begin until June 21 so we're off to a good start' said Miss Risebrough. For farmers who need help with the various chores on their farms, Miss Rise- brough said that taking on an '"'Agricrew" is a lot less hassle. An Agricrew team of four work on a farm on a daily basis and perform numerous taks. They bring their own lunches, and provide their own transpor- tation.
