March 3), 1982 Sports A oo fried 2 i \ | Ae Pee Wee B's open series with 8-4 win For the second year in a row, a Lindsay rink skipped by Bob Bovie captured the annual Seagrams Open Bonspiel held Saturday at Port Perry Curling Club.Jack Maylor, Seagrams rep. presented the trophy to winning skip and team mates Mary McKay, Ruth Bovie, and Fred McKay. Port team goes out with overtime loss The Port Perry Legion Pee Wee All Stars lost their final bid in the semi-finals, when Alliston scored with 37 seconds remaining in the overtime period. The Port boys made several gallant efforts, coming from behind several times throughout the game. Port was down 4-0 in the first period before Brad . Menzies scored Port's first goal, assisted by Dave Burnett and John Harman. The second goal came mid- way in the second period when John Harman tucked it in the corner assisted by Dave Burnett. Alliston went ahead 5-2 with 36 seconds left in the second period. Port came out in the third answered goals, to put the game into overtime. Port's marksmen were John Harman unassisted; John Harman again to give him a "Hat Trick", from Brad Menzies; and David Culbert tied the game on a fine solo effort. : Port got off to a poor overtime start when Alliston scored two quick goals. Port once again came back to tie the game on a short handed goal by Robbie Baker assist- ed by Dave Burnett and David Culbert, and Dave Burnett put in Port's final goal unassisted. It appeared the game would remain a tie and Port would get the next home game, but the determined Alliston squad ruined the and scored with 37 seconds to go, completing the score 8-7. The move to *"B" category this year, certainly provided tough competition for the Port teams, but with two overtime losses in the semi- finals indicates we: were close. Congratulations go to all members of the Port Perry Legion All-Stars for their fine efforts. Each boy contributed in his own special way. These teams are still in contention by Paul Van Camp On Sunday, March 28, The Port Perry George Stone Realtors PeeWee No. 2 team hosted Forest for the first game of the hest of 5 Ontario Finals and skated to & some what different 8-4 victory. The game started out slowly until Blair Phillips popped one if with Mike Gibson assisting Blair Bailey then made it 2-0 with Stephen Connors and Robbie Brown assisting. Forest then scored to make it only a one goal lead. Then Brown and Bailey set up Connors, Brad Traves made it 4-1 when he flipped a nice backhander over the goalies shoulder after Tim Allsopp and Gibson fed it to him beside the net. Phillips and Jamie Menzies then made it a three goal lead. Forest scored two and Port one by Connors from Bailey and Dan Vernon. That made it 6-3 after two periods of play. Forest then scored their last goal on a power play, but Port added another pair, one unassisted by Mike Gibson the other by Jamie Cannon assisted by Craig Venning and Phillips. That made the final 8-4 for Port. We travel to Forest for two games next weekend. OVERTIME WIN On Tuesday, March 23, the Port Perry George Stone Realtors, PeeWee No. 2 Club travelled to Woodbridge for game 6 of the semi-final series and skated away to a well earned 3-2 overtime victory. Woodbridge started the scoring late in the first period, then took a two goal lead early in the second frame. Realizing we had to start soon as we did not want a seventh game in this series, the Port team came to life and took control of the game at the mid-way point of the second period. We finally put a goal in the net when Blair Phillips and Craig Venning worked together to set up Jamie Cannon who put the puck in the net over the fine Woodbridge goaltender. The score remained 2-1 for the home at the end of the middle period. A fired up Port team then took advan- tage of a Woodbridge penalty to tie the game early in the third period. Mike Gibson and Brad Traves pooled together to give Blair Phillips the puck in the slot who put it between the goalie's legs. The score remained 2-2 for the re- mainder of regular time despite Port having total control of the play and getting numerous chances. A two minute break, then, overtime. We still controlled the play in this period, but could not score until there was just 2:13 left in the game when Gibson passed the puck to Traves who headmaned it to Phillips who made one move around their -defence- man then deked out the netminder and put it be- tween the pipes to make it 3-2. Port held on to that lead and kept the victory to advance to the All-Ontario Finals against Forest. Novice series will go right down to the wire by Linda Parry On Tuesday, March 23, the J.T. Pearce Autioneers travelled to. Stouffville to play their first championship game. They were defeated 4-1. This game saw a lot of strong end to end play by both teams, but also a lot of heavy body work by Stouff- ville. Stouffville scored once in the first period on goalie Shawn Larocque but Shawn made some fantastic saves to hold the lead at 1. In the second period Noel Lovering went into net for. Port and even with hard work by Lovering, Stouff- ville was able to put three more past him. Danny Sluggett scored the only 'Port goal in the final period on an unassisted rush. On Saturday, the Auction- eers played in a tournament in Uxbridge. The first game was against Uxbridge and Port blanked them 6-0. The boys played a super game and Uxbridge broke away very seldom, however, when they did, goaltenders Larocque and Lovering were able to stop them. The Port goals were scored by Jan Heyes, Steve Staniland, Mark Andrews, Mike Feasby two, and Danny Sluggett. Assists were credited to Jason Cochrane two, Mike Feasby, Jan Heyes, Steve Staniland, Mark Andrews and Greg Fitzgerald, | : were thrashed by an 11-3 score. Sharon was ahead 7-0 before Port even got on the board. Then Port retaliated with three goals. The goals were scored by Steve Stani- land, Jason Cochrane and Mark Andrews. The assists by Jason : Cochrane, Mike Feasby two, Steve Staniland, Jan Heyes and Danny Sluggett. Noel Lovering was in net for Port and just couldn't hold off the Sharon shooters. . + On Sunday afternoon, the spectators got a chance to watch. one of the most thrilling games as the Auctioneers met up with the Stouffville Polar Bears for their second playoff game. The team came from behind on a Stouffville 3-1 lead to defeat them 4-3. Besides the excitement of the game, Mark Andrews of Port Perry scored twice and the first one gave him his 50th of the season. Stouffville opened the scoring in the first period, picking the corner on goal- tender Shawn Larocque. Then Mark Andrews shot one through the legs of the Stouffville goalie, assisted by Jan Heyes. Stouffville scored twice more in the second period and then goaltender Noel Lovering came into net for, the Auctioneers. The boys never let up and Jan Heyes scored for Port off a pass from Jason Cochrane and Mark Andrews. In less than another minute Mark Andrews scored the tieing goal on a corner shot assisted by Jan. Heyes and Ian Robertson. Port won the game with a goal at the 4 minute mark when -Danny Sluggett broke away and Steve Staniland picked up the rebound shot. The boys will play again on Wednesday night in Stouff- ville and the outcome of that game will decide the championship. Atoms lose opener On Wed. Mar, 24th, the Malmont Farm Atoms dropped a 2-0 loss in the second game of The Ont. Finals against Ernestown. The series is now tied at one game apiece, The 'Green Machines will have to improve their play if they are to stay in contention with this powerful team, could not capitalize on this advantage. A sharp goalie robbed us on the few scoring chances that we had.
