The Toronto-Havelock Passenger Association is still waiting for a reaction from the provincial Tran- sportation Ministry to a transit plan which the Association claims will improve service, and save the government up to $100 million in the process. The Association claims that a "much more extensive and superior transit service for Scarborough and north- east Metro' could be provided for capital expenditures of about $30 million, by using existing rail services and facilities from Agincourt. The service between Agincourt and Union Station Pensioners urged to avoid having payments cut-off Health and Welfare Canada officials are urging Old Age Pensioners in Ontario who are already getting Guaranteed Income Supplement to re-apply immediately to avoid the risk of having the payments discontinued. Pensioners who had been receiving GIS during the past year, were mailed the applications - early in January. According to W.A. Wright, Assistant Director General of the program, many pensioners have been waiting for T4 slips before completing applications. Since deadline for the T4's was the end of February, they should have them in their hand anytime now and thus be in a position to complete the applications, he said. More than 400,000 applica- tions were mailed in January. According to Mr. Wright - 140,000 have yet to re-apply. The GIS program requires. , annual re-application by' recipients because of the possible change in income. "Recipients whose income has decreased will receive larger payments. "We urge all persons who receive the applications to re-apply as quickly as possible so that they will continue to receive the pay- ments to which they are entitled without interrup- tion," Mr. Wright said. On another front, Mr. Parkes said the Association hopes to learn in the very near future the outcome of a two day hearing last month at the Ontario Supreme Court, in which the Association sought an injunction over-ruling the federal government decision to halt the train service from Havelock to Toronto. "We asked that the order -in-council decision be over- turned because the cut-backs (in service) were in the wrong, places, and the line merits-Keeping," said Mr. Parkes. He indicated that a Court ruling on the application for an injunction could come as early as this week.
