The Port Perry MoJacks continued their winless slide last week and now have their backs to the wall in the race for a playoff spot. MoJacks have lost seven of their last eight games, and the only reason they still have a shot at a playoff spot is because two other teams, Bewdley and Uxbridge, have also been struggling lately. Last Thursday night in Port Hope, the MoJacks built a5-2lead over the Panthers, then allowed the home team to score four unanswered 'goals in the final period for a - 5 victory. And in front of a sparse crowd Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, the Stouffville Clippers decided the game in the first two minutes, rapp- ing in three goals en route to a9 -4 romp. MoJacks have six games remaining and they need two wins to clinch a playoff spot. The last home game of the season this Sunday - against Bewdley -will be crucial as will be matches January 29 in Lakefield and February 5 in Uxbridge as it is these three clubs who are looking for playoff spots as well. The other games are against Cobourg, Bowman- ville and Lindsay, the top three clubs in the Junior C loop. On Sunday night at home, the MoJacks allowed the Clippers to score three times in the first 1:32. Kevin McGuckin with two and Al Weddell with one did the damage, and McGuckin added another before the end "of the first period which was totally dominated by the Clippers. In the opening minute of the second period, the visitors rapped, another behind Ray Gibson, who did not have a good night in the MoJack net. Bob Wildman finally got the MoJacks on the board at 3:15 as he deflected a shot from Ian Turner. At 10:54, despite some good pressure by the MoJacks, the Clippers Bob Ambrose slid a. shot along the ice to make the score 6 - 1. Jamie Boyer in the Clipper net had to be sharp as Port Perry applied good pressure. Charlie Brown and Tony Oxléy both had good scoring chances and Mike Mithcell hit a cross bar. Mitchell finally scored at 12:10 taking passes from Durward and Mikkelsen. He worked into the clear in front of the net and fired the puck as he was falling to the ice. Alexander got one back for the MoJacks, deflecting a hard shot from the point off the stick of Brad Hurst who made a good play to control the puck at the blue line. The final goal for the MoJacks came at 10:36, also a deflection by Wildman with Mikkelsen and Hurst draw- ing the assists. with forward Tim Thompson and defenseman John Robertson both out with injuries,MoJacks ran into more problems in the third period when Brown took a check and left the game with an injury to his arm. If Brown is out for any length of time, it will decimate the blue line corps. Brown had been carrying the puck with authority using his speed to good advantage. Leading scorer Todd Wilbur is still feeling the effects of a back injury, and in the first period of the game Sunday he was tossed out for fighting with Al Weddell. It was an unusual call, as the "fight" was little more than a few shoves and slaps. In the second period, MoJacks out shot Clippers 24 to six and the margin was 16 - 6 in the final period. Boyer had to be very sharp in the Clipper net to keep the MoJacks from drawing close. In Port Hope, MoJacks clicked for four power play goals and one short-handed marker, but could not keep the Panthers at bay in the final period. Jamie Bird with two, Mikkelsen, Wilbur and Turner accounted for the MoJacks scoring. Bird also had a pair of assists. Just why the MoJacks have had such a dreadful second half of the season is a bit of a mystery. The loss of Thompson (knee injury) and Wilbur's back problems may be part of the reason, but in recent games the MoJacks simply have not been able to put together 60 minutes of solid hockey. And even if the team does scrape together the points for a playoff spot, the MoJacks likely will make a quick exit in the first round unless 'the calibre of play improves dramatically. MoJacks play in Lakefield on Friday night and then host the Bewdley Rangers at the Scugog Arena this Sun- day night. These games are crucial for all the teams involved. 174% ,,DONFORDER INSURANCE BROKER LTD. 30 WATERSTREET, PORT PERRY - 985-8471 SR SESSA SS ai i
