PPHS Midget Rebels score lone victory by Kevin Harris Port Perry High Schools boys basketball teams travelled to McLaughlin High School last Tuesday, January 19. All three squads had exciting fast paced games. The midget Rebels were the only ones to come out on top. Midgets Port's midget team played a solid contest against the faster moving M.C.V.I. squad. The Rebels grabbed an early lead in the first quarter. At half time the visitors were up by 10 points, 22 - 12. After an uneventful third period the home team came back, but fell short to the Rebels 36 - 27. Vaughan McKee played well on the boards and Darryl Musselman banked in 14 points in the win as Paul Bateman hit for 6 points. Sam McCreight put a single on the score board. McLaughlin's top point getter was Al King who netted 11 points for the home team. Seniors The seniors were coming off two wins as they trotted out to center court to try and upset the tough home team. Port opened up earlier with strong defence and a patient offence. The team saw their lead disappear, at the buzzer which ended the first period 19 - 16. In the remainder of the half the home team looked invincible as they powered into a demanding 34 - 22 half time. McLaughlin's domination hooped in 15 points. continued in the third Manvers Mens Hockey League Friday, January 22, TEAM GP. The first line brought back to a 12 point deficit at the end of the third period, 48 - 31. In the final eight minutes of play the Rebels kept fighting to bring" the game back to them. As the squad came closer and closer the clock ran faster and faster. After key baskets by Wallace, Stone, Harris went to the foul line and made both free throws to bring the game to a one point deficit. Port had kept the McLaughlin team off the score board for over six minutes with key steals and fast anticipation. Unfortunately the proud Rebel men went down in defeat. They had no more energy left and little strength to fight off the power of M.C.V.I. for the entire fourth quarter. The team played superb in the 54 - 47 loss. Scott Wallace topped the Rebel score sheet with 16 points as Pete Stone con- tributed 14 points and led the squad with 6 rebounds. Kevin Harris swished 8 points and led in assists and steals with 8 and 4 res- pectively. Also congratulations to the fourteen other players because without a true team effort we would not be enjoy- ing the successful year we have had so far. A special thanks also to the mothers of the Legion Pee- wees, for supplying and serving cupcakes and donuts to each team in the tourna- ment. The rink skipped by Norm MacKinnon [front left] won the first schedule of the Junior Curling last week, with a victory over the Bruce Young team.
