Accidents down in 1981 say OPP A general reduction in the number of accidents and the number of persons killed in OPP jurisdiction last year was welcome * news according to Acting Ontario Provincial Police Commis- sioner Jim Erksine, who is also Chairman of the Ontario Traffic Safety Council. ] The most significant' decrease was in the number of persons killed, down to 910 from 947 in 1980. There have been reductions of about four percent in the number killed over each of the last two years. Acting Commissioner Erskine stresses' 'that although the figures are down, it is imperative that all drivers assist the police in their mandate .to stop the carnage on our highways. The OPP will be striving for a greater reduction in acci- dents in 1982. The total number of acci- dents reported by the OPP in 1981 was 74,088. This was down three percent from the previous year's total, of 76,337. : Experience and research studies have shown there isa definite relationship between enforcement of traffic laws and the extent of accidents in the same period. The OPP officers on patrol will con- tinue to vigorously 'enforce the seat -belt provisions of The Highway Traffic Act. "Your chances of survival are much greater, and you'll suffer less serious injuries if you have an,accident when you are buckled-up," Erskine explained. Asked what the average driver could do to prevent an accident, Acting Commiss- ioner Erskine said: 'There are no guarantees, but being alert, driving defensively and refraining from ex- cessive drinking prior to driving, are all good points to remember." . It is encouraging to note that as a result of increased patrols, drinking and driving warnings, spot checks and the new 12-hour driver's licence suspension program, only one fatal accident occurred on the thousands of kilometers of roads and high- ways policed by the 189 OPP detachments during the 3 jday New Year holiday week- end. On the average week- end, 5 people are killed on Ontario highways. Cartwright High students finish week of exams by Sandi Little It's a nightmare come true!
