~ by M. Leatherdale On Sat. Jan. 2nd, the Malmont Farm Atom A's were entered in the Beaver- ton Tournament, they played their first game at 9 o'clock against Woodville. This game seemed rather slow compared to their other games, it was not until late in the first period that Jeff Mills put Port ahead 1 - 0, after a beautiful two way OMHA midget The Ontario Minor Hockey Association will investigate an ugly incident December 28 at the Scugog Arena during the annual Midget . Hockey Tournament. A match between Sutton and Otonabee turned into a passing play from Mike Sorley. Woodville retaliated late in the second period. The Green Machines had' so "many excellent scoring chances had it not been for a sharp Woodville goalie, the score would have been much higher. Woodville took a costly penalty with only one minute left in the game and Sean Bradbury popped in the winning goal, with Chris (Remi Avr it Lids ' '34 NPA" Chadd A yd SH 'e Legere earning the assist. The second game of the day, was against Beaverton, the boys had the sleep from their eyes and were really up for this game. Only twenty- one seconds had been played when Daryl Leatherdale picking up the puck from his own face-off had Port on the scoreboard, the remainder of the period was close checking with end to end fo investigate hockey brawl brawl when the referees called the game late in the second period with Otonabee leading 1-0. Mr. Scott told the Star that a full report from the referees and one from the Port Perry Minor Hockey Association has been filed with the OMHA. Apparently, the incident began when the Sutton team was assessed a series of penalties which left four players in the penalty box and just two skaters and the goalie on the ice. One Sutton player had already been ejected from the game. Because Sutton did not have enough players on the ice to continue, the referees called the game and awarded Otonabee the victory. At this, a series of fights broke out on the ice, apparently at the instigation of the Sutton players. Members of the PPMHA, executive had to assist the referees in clearing the ice and getting the Sutton players to stay in their dress- ing room. Mr. Scott said the entire _ matter is now in the hands of the» OMHA and there could be severe suspensions handed out to the players involved. No matter what action the OMHA takes, Mr. Scott made it clear the Port Perry Minor Hockey executive will not allow that particular Sutton team to play again at the Scugog Arena, he tournament was won by the Port Perry Midget team which defeated Otonabee 4 - 3 in a close final game. i ROPHIES 1 ENGRAVING i IDO-NO's| boscoe CRAFT & HOBBY 178 QUEEN STREET - 985-2839 p/p -- nn mm NN 985-8631 f ] We. ! PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed. Janvary 6, 1982 -- 19 Atoms capture tournament championship - play. The scoring opened up in the second period with Beaverton tying the score, then Daryl Leatherdale got his second goal of the game on a super pass from Clair Cornish, only seconds later Clair Cornish scored on a pass from Daryl Leather- dale, Beaverton threatened again when they scored less than a minute later. Jeff Mills on a solo effort gave Port a 4 - 2 lead, but Beaver- ton not giving up added one more then pulled their goalie, but were unable to overcome the excellent play- ing of the Green Machines. This 4 - 3 win now gave Port the opportunity to advance to the championship. The final game was played at 6.15 against Omemee. Having watched their pre- vious game, the boys knew they were up against stiff competition, they knew everyone of them had to give his best effort if they were to be victorious. Omemee were fast on the scoreboard, scoring at the 56 second mark of the opening period, but Port was not to be left behind, Paul Wylie play- ing a strong defensive game, cleared the puck to Sean Bradbury who in turn passed to Daryl Leatherdale, letting go a low shot to the corner, the score is now tied. Omemee scored their second goal only two minutes later, and the remainder of the period was a goalies dual, each coming up with those unbelievable saves. Port tied the score early in the second period on a goal by Clair Cornish assisted by Chris Legere. Omemee again took the lead 3 - 2 and the last seven minutes were action packed, Port killing off a penalty, then having two power play chances, but fail- ing to capitalize on either. With only 46 seconds play- ed into the third period, Omemee went ahead 4 - 2. Omemee's goalie being screened, never saw the blistering shot from the blue blistering shot from the blue line by Paul Wylie. This goal added confidence and with the fans cheering them on how could they help but score, and such a pretty goal, Jeff Mills shooting the puck across the goal crease, where Jarett Harmen was parked right at the corner of the net and he certainly made no mistake finding the open corner. With only two minutes remaining, and Port keeping the pressure on, they took the lead for the first time in the game on a well earned goal by Eric Grosvenor from Daryl Leatherdale, the remainder of this period had to be one of the most exciting they have played, Omemee pulled their goalie, but with six attackers The Green Machines all worked together to withhold their 5 - 4 win. On Tues. Dec. 22nd, The Malmont Farm Atoms travelled to Cobourg for a regular league game. There was no stopping Cobourg in this game, as they outplayed and out- skated Port in the first and second periods. at the end of the second period, Cobourg had built up a 5 - 0 lead. Port started to play hockey in the third period and picked up threee goals, the first by Jeff Mills unassisted, Mike Sorley made it number two, assists going to Jimmy Vernon and Matt Durward, then Jeff Mills scored his second of the game, Jarett Harmen and Todd Heyes each earning an assist. Cobourg scored once more late in the period to end the game at 6 - 3. Bantams reach tourney final by Carol Wilbur On Tues.
