Dec- ember 23) in Belleville, it will be the start of a new hockey "career' that could take him to arenas in New York City, California, Texas and maybe even Europe. Mike, who played minor and Junior C hockey in Port Perry is among 30 hockey players in '"'Slap Shot Live," an on-ice production that combines show-biz, slap stick comedy, and good basic hockey skills, all aimed at entertainment for the entire: family. In an interview with the Star last week, Mike said that essentially "Slap Shot Live" is a hockey game between two teams, the underdog Charlestown Chiefs, and the hot shot World Stars. It is based roughly on the popular movie "Slap Shot" which starred Paul New- man, but minus the coarse . language and overt violence. Mike says that during the 90-minute "game," there are about 30 comedy skits, which will keep audiences doubled over in laughter. "Some of the skits are so funny, I still can't stop from laughing at them myself when we rehearse and practise them," says Mike. One includes : chaining a Doberman Pincher to the goal-post, in an effort to keep "opposing forwards away from the net. Mike became involved with "Slap Shot Live" a couple of months ago when he answered a newspaper ad asking for hockey players. There were about 60 players at the try-out camp held in Pickering and this number was eventually trim- med to 30. Mike says that all the players have hockey back- grounds: nfany played junior, university, or semi- pro, and one is a Canadian who played for a team in Holland. 3 - Even though comedy is an important ingredient in the production, good sound hockey skills and knowledge were a pre-requisite for all the players. The. players have been rehearsing four days a week recently in preparation for Opeing night in the Belleville na, That's the kick-off for a 28 "game pilot series in towns and cities across Ontario which will wind up in Maple Leaf Gardens on March 14. Included in this series is a stop January 9 at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium, and tickets for this game are already selling well, says Mike. If this pilot series proves successful and '"'Slap Shot Live" brings people into the arenas, a second tour this spring will include Buffalo, New York City and Boston. And next September, the players will hit the road for a six month North American tour which will take them as far away as California, Texas and possibly Europe. Mike recently signed a contract for the 28 game Ontario series, and says he is very excited about the prospects. ""This could be a once in a lifetime opportunity; a chance to travel and play some hockey," he says. And it could be lucrative for him as well. If the North American tour gets under- way next fall, he could earn as much as $25,000 plus all expenses for six months work. Hockey fans in 'Port Perry will recall that when Mike played Junior here, his style was steady, but tough. And at six feet and a solid 205 pounds, he could hand out some bone-jarring body checks. For "Slap Shot Live," he's been tagged with the nick- name "Mad Dog," which is an indication of the kind of role he'll be playing. "There are four defense- men on our team, and three of us are over six feet and weigh more than 200 pounds," he says. . "Slap Shot Live" is being promoted by David Emmer- son of Oshawa and his 19-year old son Mark, a . former Junior A player who is a member of the team. They felt that if the Har- lem Globe Trotters could entertain audiences with a combination of basketball skills and comedy routines, the same could be done on ice with the game of hockey. Port dominated and out- shot Uxbridge in the first period and the Uxbridge goalie kept his team in the game, it was reversed in the second period, with Ryan LaRocca keeping the Green Machines alive. : Both periods were score- less and it was not until the 26 mark of the third that Jarett Harman scored a short handed goal, assisted by Mike Sorley. One minute later while both teams were playing four aside, Uxbridge tied the score. Both teams seemed a little flat for this game, not showing their usual hockey spirit. Our last game before the Xmas holidays was in Cobourg on Tues. Dec. 22nd. Novice A squad posts 6-1 victory by Elaine Larocque In a regular season game Fri. Dec. 18, the J. T. Pearce Auctioneers Novice defeated Pickering Village by a score of 6-1. Michael Feasby, on a pass' from Steve Staniland opened "up the scoring at 3:42 in the first period. The pressure was put on the Pickering goalie as shot after shot narrowly missed their mark. With less than a minute let in the first period, Pickering tied the score on a break- away. Early in the second period, Mark Andrews put the Auct- foneers ahead on a' scoring pass from Greg Fitzgerald.. Less than three - minutes later Steve Staniland, assist- ed + by '= Michael Feasby, scored Port's third marker of the game. Halfway into the second. period Shawn Larocque replaced 'Noel Lovering in net for Port. Good defensive play by Chris Forder, Danny slugget, Jason Cochrane and Ian Robertson kept the play in Pickering's end for most of the game. With a minute and a half left in the second period, Port's Mark Andrews scored his second goal of the night with the assist going to Jason Cochrane, to give the Auctioneers a 4 - 1 lead. At the 7:50 mark in the third period, Scott Menzie, assisted by Steve Staniland, scored the Auctioneers fifth goal. Pickering had only one shot on Port's net and Shawn Larocque came up with the save. The final goal of the game for Port went to Jan Heyes.
