Ee ---- an 2 RE "Health Unit guidelines rapped (From page 1) 'preparation of food. While most are fairly straight for- ward, there are some which could present problems at certain outdoor events. One provision calls for the floors of food preparation areas to be made: of 'wood, concrete or asphalt, and the floors "must be painted or otherwise treated to ensure ease of cleaning." - And the walls of food preparation areas must be of sound construction, not canvas or plastic. The cooking of food in the community and charitable events, lasting not longer than a single day. Another provision calls for the treatment of roads lead- ing to the event to prevent dust problems, prior to the event and as often as necessary after that. open is only permitted for - Stereo head phone sets could lead to problems The Canada Safety Council is asking parents who give stereo headphone sets that can be used with portable receivers to young people for Christmas to also ensure the users are aware of hazards involved with careless use. These items, while not necessarily restricted by law, are dangerous when used by the driver of a motor vehicle, because they can reduce awareness of warning signals, or blot them out altogether. The same applies to the high quality new automobile stereo systems played at ~ high volume. There has now been one recent case of a young ped- estrian struck by a train of which he was apparently unaware. This instance gives a clear indication of the ability of this equipment to drown out other sounds. A driver was reported to have been fined in Orvieto, Italy, for driving while using a headset; there have been similar cases in Switzerland. Stereo headsets do not come under any federal statute; they are not in themselves hazardous products and standards setting organizations cannot control usage after pur- chase. Yet the danger comes in the way the headphones are used. The Canada Safety Council suggests owners of stereo headphones ensure long- term enjoyment of the equip- ment by: » 1. never using them while driving a car or motorcycle. 2. never using them while riding a bike. 3. never using them when walking down any street. 4. never using them when operating any powered vehicle - such as snowmobile or boat. Parents of young people are urged to satisfy them- selves that these restrictions will be observed.
